Hi Guys, yes 5% about the same as my body at the moment, just nudging 40 in the shed.

Pete the top only has two tenons on each leg glued into the top. It all seems very stable even under the very extreme ambient conditions. At this stage it does not have any screws or fixings other than glued joints. I'm considering a couple though just to be on the safe side.

Hi, I love your work Another universe to what I have attempted so far. Can you tell me what you used to finish the tabletop & how you applied it. Would you be able to suggest something suitable for a red cedar bar top. Mal Ward delivered a great 3m slab last week I have a lot of work ahead of meIm keeping it simple I will mount the slab on a base of convict sandstock bricks,my bricklaying was good enough to build a woodfired oven some years back,a big one. But my woodwork teacher at school said I was the worst student he had since the war It was the 70s & he meant WW 2Moikel

I did a 3.5 x 1.2m Cedar dining table for a woman in Randwick just before Xmas. I don't get into anything fancy. Like this Blackwood one, the Cedar table had 4-5 coats of Estipol or on this one I'm useing Feast Watson Satin Floor Seal. I sand the top to about 240 or 320 at the most then the coats with a light sand between. Once all the coats are on I cut the top back with 1200 wet and dry with a light oil ( I mix about 50/50 turps and linseed) using a cork block. Once I have a nice even smooth surface I rub it down again with 0000 steel wool and the same oil mix. Be-u-d-full butter smooth finish that you can put hot cups/plates, grog etc very tuff. If any thing happens to it, you give it a light sand and patch it up.
You bench sounds great, please post some pics of it. Hmm I never did like teachers.

PS you don't have to do 5 coats but because the Cedar is so soft I give it a couple extra to tuffen it up.
The Blackwood table has 4 coats.

Thankyou for that very clear & concise explanation. I definitely have some work ahead of me I picked cedar because I figure it wood be easier to work than a lot of other timber. Also I have to get it on the roofrack & drive it 3hours to install it,so lifting a 3 m slab of hardwood to big an ask. Ill post some pics as I progress,it will be a long ride. Wife has offered to help with posting but not that co-operative when I ask her to mix mortar ,clean bricks...

Roofrack took 8 boxs of bamboo t&g flooring,160kg. Then 3 hour drive in worst wind storm in South Coast history,other than wearing a branch ( species unknown)that came at me from side at 80ks outside Nowra & dodging fallen power lines all good. I have perfected double overhand grannyknot for securing loads
