    Bob,

I'm referring to a set of subjects that seem to become wrestling matches over the past year or so. A number of these threads have been locked.

    Regards,
    Rob

    Nooooo !

My knee-jerk reaction is that this resembles the emoticons that are taking over communication. More and more, people (especially kids) seem to communicate by texting each other. Clearly this form of communication lacks "something" (duh ... body language, eye contact, voice emphasis ....) and an attempt is made to make up for this with a picture of a facial expression. Bob pointed to this as well. My reaction is that my day job involves working with kids for whom much of their difficulties can be attributed to limited communication skills, and too much screen time and too little face-to-face contact is to blame. I would hate to see the forum descend to this level (a bit of an exaggeration, but really not that far off ... a sign of the times?).

    Regards from Perth

Derek, I guess we all have our own "likes" and "dislikes". I don't see much wrong with likes, as they give people a way to express their appreciation of what was posted without having to verbalise exactly what or why they liked it, which could attract dissenting views from the OP or other posters.

One of the things I dislike is people that post unattributed quotes, as you have done in post #17, I think that is both confusing and discourteous to the person you are quoting.

Fixed that Fred. I agree with you, by the way.

One very good thing about the Likes is that it has largely removed a whole string of posts only containing

    " "

    which I disliked intensely.

Another aspect of posting remarks is that it comes up again in the "New posts" which will ensure that others that may have missed it previously now see the thread.

Peter, that is true! In my current build thread, the Sofa Table, in the last two posts I made (each displaying work over a couple of weeks), generated a number of likes but not a single comment. The time before that generated one attaboy! Effectively the thread died after someone went "Like". If they had instead gone "attaboy", at least they would receive notification that someone had responded, and they would have been in a position to comment again (even if it was "Attaboy again").

To Derek - you would prefer 10 posts saying "attaboy" than 10 likes on a single post?
Just asking as I, like others, enjoy following your builds but in most instances having no real in depth comments or questions. I don't mind ticking a "like" but posting "attaboy" seems unnecessary and superfluous

why not just have one button labelled "Discussion"? Stop all the rubbish and let people offer questions and answers to their view of the piece or problem and discussion can stop when the asker has found an answer he wishes to use. The LIKE button just encourages a bland unthinking response.
"Aw yeah, looks pretty OK" is not that useful and implies that the replier just wasn't in the mood to say why. While I'm at it. Could people register the fact that they have received a Private message, whether they want to discuss the subject raised or not? Surely it's not too hard to just say thanks, but no thanks.

I sense that the people who in the past would have commented on the level of work that Derek does are no longer here or do not post but are more on lookers these days. I would not dare to add comment to a build thread from Derek but I no longer subscribe to threads and I can name at least four other people who no longer contribute to this forum on the same regular basis they once did, in fact it would be more than four now I come to think about it. What I am trying to say is posting a like is the best that a lot of people can do due to their perceived lack of ability to comment in a constructive or critical manner.
