    Default Room divider commission

This is my latest commission. Completed and installed just before my shoulder began to freeze. I haven't been able to tackle any big projects since then due to the pain, and it still hasn't finished freezing. The brief was to create a room divider to block a view from the front door into a bathroom/toilet and provide a bookshelf as well.
I chose to design it in sketchup. The interest is provided by building alcoves around several embedded Fibonacci series. The model shows one part of the piece. There is a second piece which is the mirror image of the Fibonacci section, so that these two are placed back to back to create alcoves on both sides and sandwich the leadlight and translucent windows between.

I chose to construct it from Surian cedar, which can be a delightful timber to work when you get the dense stuff and, but just awful when you get the balsa-like stuff. I got a little of the latter. Some of this stuff refused to stay straight (cupped) which necessitated an extremely complex glue-up involving making numerous braces to force things straight until cured. Also all the joints were blind rebated half lap joints which required much use of skew rabbet planes to cut out. Fortunately it worked out OK. As with everything there were mistakes that needed correcting, such as an exposed rebate joint that was supposed to be blind and returning it to blind with a repair.
The leadlight allows the mathematical series to diminish down to a very small size and provides some colour interest. Thanks for looking.

    Bugger!

I'd have gone both blind and crazy if I'd tried this.

    Well done!

Very nice! I like the Fibonacci element: out of interest, did you 'let' sketch up define that, or did you have to specify? I've not come across that in it before.

And (perversely) good to see the mistake, even in a piece crafted like this- I think we all make at least one per project (I certainly do...)

I did it manually in SU. It's pretty simple... make a rectangle with a Golden Ratio, divide out a square, you're left with a rectangle with a Golden Ratio, divide out a square, you're left with a rectangle with a Golden Ratio, divide out a square......

    Thanks and cheers!

edit. The spiral is then drawn thus: draw out an arc that is a quadrant of a circle, centred on a corner of each square. This will give a very close approximation to a spiral
