    Default Dresser WIP

Received a request from my niece ...

    Request.jpg

Kate originally asked for a desk. The day I pulled down the timber for the legs she changed her mind to a dresser. Her daughter Zara is as bad (see Bedside Table WIP).

Here is the Entertainment unit I made Katie and Jon as a wedding pressie.

Thought I would make the dresser a sister unit by using the same veneers for the top that were used on the doors ... like this ...

    Veneer.jpg

Katie has a framed mirror her granddad made that she wants mounted on the unit.

    Surprise!

Katie has changed her mind ... again ... or is it "still".

She likes the veneers, but does not want cabriole legs. She has asked for tapered legs with a tapered foot, like these desks made for my grandsons (also in camphor laurel and cedar).

    More changes ...

Katie came for lunch yesterday. She now wants a dresser with NG Rosewood/cedar legs, sides and drawers with a camphor laurel top that has lipped edges rather than a cedar border around the top.

Thought I'd start before she changed her mind again. Made the legs first, In NG Rosewood.

The framed mirror Katie had was stained pine, so it will not be used. We will need to get another mirror.

I see what you did there - the old "start before the client can change their mind (again) trick".

    Exactly!

Now the legs can't be changed.

Neither can the size now. Here is the first web frame in the press. Cedar and hoop pine.

For those of you considering getting one of these presses, they do a great job of ensuring your web frames come out flat and square.

Carcass assembled. All joinery floating tenons (domino). Here it is in its clamp farm.

Far too late for any significant changes of mind now ... I hope ...

Katie was right about the legs - IMHO this dresser should also have either two drawers, or one large drawer that spans the width of the carcass. (unlike the dresser pictured in the October 15 post) . Not too late for THAT change.

The piece in the 15 Oct post is not a dresser. It is a hall table with one small drawer in the middle, as per the client's request, which I never understood. This dresser will have two drawers and a mirror. Two drawers makes a lot more sense to me.

Drawer detail. Rebates are cut in front of drawer with a dado blade. Drawer is assembled, tacked in place with a brad in each corner and clamped. Once glue is dry, 8 mm holes are drilled and stained dowels are glued into place.

Drawer runners lubed with dry PTFE ... top buffed... all finished except for knobs and a mirror (to be provided by Katie).
