Default My Dumb Dumb small Table

Sally and I recently worked together on the design of this, for mentioned table.
Unfortunately, now that it is finally finished after a long build time, due to it being pushed to the side often.

It’s finished in all it’s glory, Sally thinks it’s fantastic, I’m having reservations about it, I’m not sure why, but ,I’m just not that into it.

    I can’t explain why, I don’t like, it but I just don’t [emoji85].

Not sure if I should go the easy way, and excepted marital Blitz, or wait for a Full moon and sacrifice it the Gods of Tools and Timber explaining that I am not worthy!.
Then explaining too Sally that it’s best I spent the next week sleeping in the spare room!.

Anyway it’s Red gum for the legs, Red gum for the edging around the Top an shelf.

The Top an shelf were made from 16 mm MDF with both sides finished in Huon Pine veneer.

An after reading Lances thread on the Table he recently finished, I final settled on the same finish, of 50/50 varnish an Turps.

    Cheers Matt

Don't be too hard on yourself it looks quite well balanced, if I was to nit pick I would have done the Huon veneer differently, (and this is more to do with how a was taught when doing my City & Guild's in furniture making) I would have selected the veneer so that the end grain on each segment butted each other, so your pic showing the top or shelf individually, in the top segment of that the grain is running left to right and I would have done the same for the other 3 segment's, so basically the grain would follow the outside perimeter of your table.

Matt, to be blunt, I like most of it but not the tops of the legs. There is much that is square, and this accentuates it.

What you could consider is re-shaping the the legs. My first thought is to round the outside of the legs. That is, the outside corners facing towards the table top. And then continue the curve into the top of the legs.

I think in the right setting, that table would be great Matt. Go with Sally’s decision, otherwise things could get nasty ( it’s cold outside you know )

And Brad is correct, of course.

You will need to be very diplomatic if changes are discussed. Or just live with it. Happy wife ... and all that

Thank you all for the feed back, unfortunately due too he either a soft back or being highly intelligent(na) diplomacy will win yet again,
Hopefully the table finds a home just out of my view.
It is rather cold outside at present.

    Cheers Matt.

I'm not going to comment on the materials or finish which look fine to me but I'm prepare to be blunt about the design.
When I first saw it I thought it was a pot plant stand but someone had made a mistake in the spacing of the bottom shelf.

However, some furniture has to be seen in context to be appreciated/understood, so seeing where it is going to be located an what is going to be place on it could make a big difference.
The dimensions could suit a beside table but I reckon the tops of the legs will be a bit of a nuisance.

Know exactly what you mean about partner designed objects - can get very tricky at times.

Bob, would you like Sally’s contact details, it was her choice for the shelf location [emoji6],

Hanging half a dozen pics with SWMBO yesterday.
12ft ceiling room with picture rails at about 11ff so up and down ladder multiple times.
Pic x too high/low, move pic y left/right, swap pics x and y. Now swap with x etc
i lost it and went off in huff.
SWMBO has vertigo and can’t do ladders.
She worked out the order on the floor and eventually I calmed down and hung them.
begrudgingly I admitted she had a better eye for this sort of thing than I do.😮

Matt,I think you're being hard on yourself. It looks very practical to me.Because both my wife and I enjoy building bits and bobs for the house, we've ended up with a de-facto position where we both build what we think it nice, and the other encourages and accepts, regardless of taste. Fortunately for the most part we like what the other makes. You have every reason to be very pleased that Sally made a piece of furniture with you, and will probably make more. Don't be an idiot and tell her you don't like it. Let the stand take pride of place in your house. Enjoy it and keep building. Perhaps at some point in the future it will be replaced with something else you or Sally made, and you'll look at how far you've come.

    Lance,
They are wise words, I’m sure Sally will agree wholeheartedly with you,I don’t “Hate” it, but I do agree with Derek an Bob, I could have gone further.
But I certainly won’t be hanging my head in sham, it was a fun build.

Sal an I do work well together mostly [emoji6], an it is fun working with her.

    Cheers Matt.
