It took a while as I only worked on it now and then and left it to do other jobs and came back to it. I can't give you an answer.

On another note. Remember I said I would give you some leather to make a strop for sharpening. Well I found that leather while searching for something else so next time you come around or I come to see the progress of the work bench it is here. Also, I just bought a full set of Ashley Iles chisels and I have a current catalogue and price list if you want to check it out..

Col, you are a good guy,

Redgum is going to please your lovely wife I'm sure, I use the oldest stuff I can find, no tension, the kind of thing that cuts like cheese, dark red, nearly brown! You just know it's not going to move! Look for some old beams, the older the better! Not sleepers! You will do justice to the timber with your skill. If you find it hard to get the Redgum give me a hoy!
I think I might have some old stuff that will fit on your trailer, I will be pleased for you to have it for nix to make a bench for your lovely and obviously tolerant wife!

    Cheers...Oddjob1

Don't worry about the colour Col. It will quickly change to a weathered gray if you leave it in the yard, where I'm assuming it is meant for. One advantage of cypress pine, especially in the garden, is that the white ants don't eat it.

Thanks for the extremely kind offer but I will be happy to pay for it if it is good stuff. Where can I catch up for a look see. My lovely wife will be more than happy as she is layed up at the moment. She is on workcover after she learned the hard way not to put her finger into a moving belt and lost the top of her finger. They are already calling her stumpy at work. They had to cut her wedding ring off with a mini grinder. Somebody may have received a surprise when they opened their Herald Sun on Sunday morning.

If anyone wants a copy of the 1987 magazine article, (4 pages) I am happy to do so. Decent plans for benches are few and far between. I can email it as a word document if you PM me with email details

Magnificent bench Col, showed the bride the pictures and the first thing she said was how nice it is and why don't I make one for our new house. I have previously built a Lutyens style bench, but yours presents a different challenge.
So, saying that if your offering plans, I will say yes for a copy, but as I am packing up my workshop as our current house is sold I wont be able to start it just yet.

Going back a few posts Col, another old tradesmans code is "its only a stuff up if you can't fix it" you fixed it so it's not a stuff, just a design change

I had to fix it because I didn't have another bit of cypress that was suitable. It is very brittle in some pieces and I hacked out a chunk that wouldn't glue back properly so out came the router. I recessed the back but had to make sure I didn't expose the mortises for the upright back slats. The next one will be better. The router will be on standby just in case though.....

    Hi Col,

I know this is a very old thread, but if you still have the article on the bench seat and don’t mind, I would like a copy if possible. SWMBO is after a bench seat, and good designs are hard to find.....
