    Default Entertainment unit

    Hi

I am fairly new to woodworking and am about to start making a smallish entertainment unit to house my DVD player, Tivo etc. My parents have a large entertainment unit that I like the look of so I have taken a lot of ideas from that.

I have done a drawing in SketchUp

Please let me know what you think and if you can see any potential design problems.

The plan of attack at the moment is to make up the main box like this

Dado joints for the middle divider and shelves and housed rabbet (I think thats what its called) for the end pieces. Is this a logical way to go about it? I am thinking of making this part of vaneered plywood and then edging it with solid wood mainly because of price seen as I am new to this. Then maybe a solid top if I am feeling confident by that stage

The legs on my parents one seems to be two pieces of wood mitered together but I could not work out how they are they attached to the frame would they just be glued or should some form of joinery be used here?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I just want to make sure I am on the right track here

    Thanks,

    Flash

You have a good plan thats always a good start. Legs I would at least put a few screws to help the glue.

Welcome to the forum, what have you made prevously?. Any photos?

Thanks for the reply. Earlier this year I made a stand for a small fish tank this was pretty much my first project so I learnt a lot from making it and would do it a bit differently if I was doing it again now.

    Here are some pics

    Thumbs up

G'day Flash and welcome to the shed.

That should look good. From the way you did the overall sketch-up I thought the legs were joined to the carcase via rebatted joints, but if you go the way of your last drawing thegood glue ( Titebond 3 for example ) and screws is the way to go.

Great, Flash, thanks for that, I've been meaning to get around to designing a bookcase in Sketch up, and here, you've done it for me!

I was honestly thinking about going for the same basic design as this, although without the centre upright.

The thing I'm worrying about is how strong the dado joints in the corners will be? To me they look like all the downwards force on the top and bottom will be carried on a tongue which is only half the thickness of the ply. Your design means the centre upright will carry a great deal of the weight, which my bookcase won't have.

I found this thread: Bookcases, from a few years back where Waldo uses a rabbet rather than a dado, which looks stronger to me.

Is anyone more experienced than me able to tell us whether the dado will be ok?
    Cheers, Richard

Perhaps a support rail under those joints? Need to tie it into the design to avoid it looking like afterthoughts.

Do you mean something like this?

If you put a rail like that in the top corners it would be pretty much hidden behind the legs.

On your design, it'll be hidden by the legs, but on mine the carcase just sits on a low frame, so the bearer will show.

I'm not sure you have the correct corner showing there. I meant under the bottom of the main carcase.

If the end shows you could hide it behind a rail running cross the front, but under the carcase. You woul need to stop the support rails short to accommodate this.
