    Default Entertainment Unit

A couple of years ago my daughter and her hubby renovated their home and nearly doubled it's size. The kids now have their own downstairs lounge and kitchenette.

The original unit was made some years ago. It is in quarter sawn Vic Ash, as noted in the pic.

The new unit will be in Surian cedar, because that's what is sitting in my racks. I got a good enough deal to buy about a quarter of a cube in one and two inch boards. The doors will be border-less this time, with the veneers forming a chevron pattern that extends into the mock drawer fronts. The "drawer fronts" will actually be hinged at the bottom to provide access to electronics, games and etc. The bottom section will have three adjustable/removable shelves, one behind each door.

Choose your boards to cut the veneers from carefully John. Having just used Surian to make a box I'm not a great fan. Some pieces were very woolly and I hate to think about resawing those pieces into veneers.

The wooliness of Surian is well established, Aldav. Generally, but not always, the darker and heavier the board, the less likely we are to get significant wooliness. I have selected a couple of boards that look OK, but all will be revealed in the fullness of time.

The veneers for the sides were cut and sanded today.

    No significant wooliness ... thankfully.

Finished size of the veneers is 2.2 - 2.3 mm thick. Perfect because I aim for a finished thickness of 2 mm after the glue up and finish sanding.

    Thanks, Wongo.

That's high praise, coming from you.

The girlie cabinets I made recently were a bit too avant-garde or odd for some. My poor sister was horrified that the legs were on the outside, and said so the second she saw them. She and others didn't like the shape of the doors, either. Nevertheless I like them.

The Vic Ash entertainment is one of my all time favourites, and is a far more traditional design. The only thing I'd do differently today is to carry the veneers all the way to the edge of the doors to eliminate the borders, and you and Ian showed me how to do that many years ago.

    Have fun!

Drawer and door dividers in place and bracing fitted under cabinet to prevent sagging.

    Internals Done.jpg

My daughter altered the design. The unit will now be fitted with normal drawers.

Sat Her Indoors on the unit so the deflection of the bottom centre of the unit could be measured. Her 63 kg mass deflected the unit by less than half a millimetre. Very pleased with that.

Then I tried to rack and twist the unit. The rigidity of well built cabinets still catches my attention. My first chest of drawers was built about 20 years ago and has been in continuous service ever since. It currently sits in my 14 year old grandson's bedroom. It has suffered the perils of moving house three times. It was so rigid when first built I decided to do a little experiment and to see what happened if I did not put a back on it. Nothing happened. Not recommending this approach to others, and all other units built since have backs. It was just a little experiment.

Three drawer fronts and three doors underway.

Pic shows an MDF door panel lipped with 20 mm of timber, ready to take veneers. Also shown is one sheet of veneer, taped up and ready for glue and the press. Pattern will be chevrons and the doors and drawers will be borderless. Drawer fronts are solid timber, and do not require lipping before the veneers are added.

Two doors are ready for glue. Third door still being lipped.

Finished veneering and sanding the doors and drawer fronts.

Sent the attached pics to my daughter and her hubby so they could choose veneer orientation.

They chose the second pic, Chalice, continuous chevrons matching through drawer and door, all pointing down.

I liked the diamond shape, but I am not the customer.

Was planning the easy way for the top ... a simple solid timber top.

But the chevrons look nice, so now I am contemplating veneering the top is a similar pattern to the doors.

Have time to think about that. Yet to make the drawers and shelves, which comes first.

    Finished!

The veneers are very pretty. If you stand to the left of the unit, the left side of each door is darker. If you stand to the right of the unit, the opposite happens. As you move around the room, the colours change.
