Default Finished (mostly) my DIY plywood kitchen

I'm done. That's it. My third and last DIY kitchen.

Thought you blokes would appreciate it.

Just missing the sink - I'm undecided what to get. Needs to be something unobtrusive. And I'm on the lookout for an interesting 1960s stove.

This is in the visitors pad upstairs that we'll probably rent out on the short stay market.

For those interested in the nuts and bolts:

    - Cupboard doors are 19mm hoop pine play stained with Sikkens Cetol HLS in light oak and then finished with Osmo Hardwax Oil.
    - Benchtops are birch ply out of two 3000 x 1500 sheets. They're stained and finished with Floorseal and then buffed for a satin finish.
    - Shelves in bookshelf are 32mm hoop pine finished as per cupboard doors.
    - Coloured panels are Dulux wash and wear with Osmo over the top so the finish matches the timber.
    - Cupboard handles are old fuse holders.
    - Island bench is from the science labs at a local school - they were tossing them out. There are three units screwed together. Loads of storage. And the drawers are labelled! It will be handy when I find myself in possession of a bunch of volumetric flasks or tuning forks or spherometers. And if someone ever gives me a thermoprobe, I'll know where to stick it.

    Scott

I was wondering about the labels on the drawers.

Great look, much better than the melamine/laminex of a modern kitchen.

    Thanks.

Yes, I've got a laminate kitchen downstairs, but the upstairs space needed a different look. It's a bit of a retro space. The plywood suits the exposed trusses etc. The furniture is 50s/60s, too. And behind the sliding red door under the TV are several hundred 70s albums.

Get a big square 'sciency' style of sink (maybe a ceramic inset type) and taps, to go with the theme.

Shows you don't have to have expensive or exotic wood to make something look beautiful, nice work.

The fuse holders, Claw, are big ones - that building was a factory. I cut them down a bit as they were too long. I've still got the ceramic cases the fuse holders went into. Need to do something with them one day.

Ikea have a drop in ceramic sink. I;ve checked it out and I'll probably go with it - partly because it's only $149. They have a good tap set, too. I did want a sink with a draining board to give the plywood bench its best chance at surviving, but there are portable draining board things.

Congratulations on all the recycling and the imaginative use of the recycled bits and pieces.

I like having my old 70s vinyl.

In these days of iPod etc (which I don't have) everyone has forgotten what it was like to have to change a record after 20 minutes or so.

I've a had a few dinners up in the space with a dozen people at a time and I have to make up a roster for people to change the records otherwise I have to get up all the time.

At the end of the night there are record sleeves and records all over the place - just like when we were kids.
