    Great job on the cabinet.

It has been an interesting WIP to follow.

As to the commentary I wonder if it should be moderated to prevent you from loosing your brownie points if the other half see the thread.

Nar moderators would be over stepping the line.

    Christos,

The LOML knows all about my posts. She is a (leadlighting) member here and can log on anytime she pleases. But I tell her what I have posted to avoid surprises.

So far her only comment, apart from a wry smile, has been ...

    Default Finished

Catches are on ... mirrors are in the top section ... cabinet is in its final resting place. Here are some pics taken with a real camera.

I'm surprised you asked, but only because I am still a novice and find it difficult to imagine another way of doing that job.

    Cheerio!

My father turns feet similar to these. He starts with a rectangular block and mounts the piece accentrically on the lathe.

    Default Brownie Points

I am accustomed to the LOML making the appropriate oohing and ahhing noises when a new piece is finished. I'm sure the dear woman would do so even if she was not particularly fond of the piece.

However, over Chrissie there has been a neverending stream of women dragged into the bedroom so SWMBO can show off her new frilly nickers cabinet. They in turn have been making all the right noises, but louder and for longer than is usual. Some have been quite over the top in their praise.

OK, its a nice piece, but why does it rate so highly with SWMBO and all our female relatives and friends? Their rating of the piece has been very high, and SWMBO still sighs when she enters the room and sees it. This morning she had me reposition the cabinet so it jumps into the line of vision as one enters the room.

I think I have it figured out. All the rest of the furniture in the house is for us, not for her. In addition, it is a very personal piece (it does not get a lot more personal than frilly underthings). One lady even said to me after she had seen the cabinet, "How romantic!"

So, those of you who could use a few Brownie points would be well advised to make something similar for your other half. If I understand things properly, it must be very personal and for her use exclusively.

    Have fun!

Interesting observation but will keep that in mind.

    ....!
I have had a similar experience with furniture crytics of the opposite sex.... Some time ago I made a Morris Style reclining chair, it was the culmination of weeks of design and woodwork, and still has pride of place in our "TV Room". When showing it off to women friends the invariable remark was "Oh! That's nice! Did you make the cushions?" - Fortunately the answer is yes...

I think that the key is that the piece has to have something they can relate to. Most women don't have a clue about dovetails and mortice and tenons and how hard they are to get right, and they probably don't give a toss. But cabled cushion covers, THAT they get. In that sense, they are no different to anyone else. For example even thogh I appreciate the skill required, my eyes glaze at wood turning.

    Vive la difference!

If you are into cabriole legs its worth considering making a sled (providing the legs can be cut from timber no larger than 50 mm square). The idea came from a bloke using a sled on youtube.

The sled is the template. Mark out the leg ... cut on bandsaw ... clamp into sled ... run over moulder ... four perfectly matching legs that require only rounding off in no time at all. The only downside is that you need a new sled for each leg size. Only have one now, but as the need arises for different sizes, new sleds will be made up. The limiting factor is the length of the cutter on the moulder. Two inch is the biggest I can find.
    Great cabinet John.

The sled is the business with a spindle moulder for sure.

I'm using one of these with a guide ring. Gives you about 80mm to play with and 4 sided blades.

    Finish is great.

Just had an "Oh sh1t!" moment after reading your post.

I was thinking I was limited to 50 mm deep stock from which to cut the legs, because the longest straight bit I could get was 50 mm.

However, I have two such bits; one with the bearing at the top and one with the bearing at the bottom. The latter is used with this sled, so the bearing runs on the sled.

However, if I had (say) 75-90 mm stock ... what is stopping me from using the cutter with the bearing at the bottom for a first pass in a sled and then taking the stock out of the sled and using the cutter with the bearing at the top to complete the shaping (running the bearing along the surface of the first cut)?

That's the problem with being self taught ... one always has a fool for a teacher. Thanks for your post. It has given me a new idea to follow up.

    Cheerio!

    John
