    Default garden bench

I'm building my first garden bench in white beech, which is a bit oily. All joinery is Domino 1/2" tenons and just want to check on (1) using poly (Bostik AV515) for the glueup and (2) whether i need to wipe it down with metho before gluing and finishing with a decent outdoor oil finish (not decided which one yet). Thanks Charlie

In a previous lifetime I was making a cabinet from N G Rosewood. I glued two quite red edges together with PVA, and the joint failed.

The issue was that the deep red areas of the timber were resinous and oily. PVA was not going to work. I asked here what glue to use and It was suggested that I use PU. I bought some Titebond PU glue and remade the seam. Many years later it remains intact. You will get other responses, but either a PU or an epoxy will normally handle oily timbers. From memory, i cleaned the edges with lacquer thinner before the glue-up.

    Have fun!

At one stage I used a spray epoxy finish on external timber.

Never again. Now I use oil ... or oil ... or if I get desperate, oil.
