Default Gate-leg Gaming Table / Calculating what wood needed for Project?

I'm building a gate-leg games table and need to know how I calculate what wood I need based on whats available at a timber yard or Bunnings?. For example I need 4 660mm x 50 x 50mm pieces in hardwood/Vic ash or oak however Bunnings don't sell lumber that thick so I will need to laminate the wood together. I also need some 1288 x 68 x 54mm.

Just for information purposes, I made the plans using google Sketchup.

    Thanks for any help.

Has anyone had any experience with using Rubberwood, I have two 2200 x 600 x 25mm Rubberwood Timber Benchtops, would this be a suitable wood for leaves of a gateleg table?.

What about suppliers such as Matthews or hazlewood and Hill. Better range than bunnies.

Are your rubberwood tops long lengths or finger jointed shorts?
But a little reading suggests rubberwood is decent timber.
Edit - misread your question. If the panels are big enough for your design I can't see why not.

Hi Russ, cheers for the reply mate. I'm waiting on a quote form both of those. so far Mathews can do 65 x 65 @ $36.10 per l/m + GST which isn't what I asked for so I asked for another quote to be done with the dimensions I requested.

I thought maybe it would be cheaper for me to laminate the timber myself. The issue I'm having is working out the amount of timber and dimension of boards/planks needed with the least wastage. For example I need 4x 660mm x 50x50mm. At Bunnings/Mathews they dont stock 50x50mm in DAR hardwood so I'm either going to laminate the timber myself (cheaper option by how much I don't know) or have Mathews laminate it for me. Given the fact theres so many Tas oak/vic ash dimensions I was hoping someone on Woodworkforum could either recommend a cut list calculator or suggest a quick way of working all this lot out.

    Rubberwood is finger jointed.

Pretty much no one is going to stock that size dressed because timber is sawn to nominal increments of 1/2" in thickness; you would buy 50mm rough sawn, but expect it to be down to about 45mm once dressed.

Normally you'd design something around the timber sizes you can easily get instead of having to laminate everything to suit...

As for calculating what you need, there's no real shortcut; make a cutting list of all the components, work out what standard section timber you need for each piece, then add it all up.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I did design the peice with timber sizes in mind. Its only the legs that need laminating, 4 main support and two gatelegs.

Well, to get 50x50 from your bench top, you need to cut 2 pieces 660 x50x25, and laminate those into a 50x50. I gather you need 6 legs. So 12 pieces. You won't get that from a single width of the panel because of the saw kerf.

I recently used CutList Optimizer for some ply panels. It might work for you.

    Hi Russ,

I'm using the rubberwood benchtops for the gateleg Leaves and centre. I will check out the Cutlist Optimizer

I've redesigned the gateleg table to be a games table/useable dining table. So far I have the Tas oak for legs and support beams. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Red Oak Plywood sold by Bunnings as I thought maybe I could use the 18mm stuff for the centre top and two drop leaf sides?. Would this type of plywood be rigid enough?, and will it stain to a dark walnut colour without any issue?.

Please let me know of any design faults or possible problems aswell!.
