GoNest 2D trial Limits?
I have just downloaded the GoNest 2D trial. I cannot find any statement of limitations on the trial. Given that the full version is over Aud$400, I assume there must be some limit on the "free" version.
Does anybody know? It seems like a VERY powerful piece of software, but I cannot justify $400.
Thanks for any input

Oh well...so far I have found that it only prints or exports one sheet per project.
Also it seems to have a bit of a weakness that would really get my goat if I was doing big lots of work. It can do ellipses/circles. But when it lays out the cuts, it will not allow the rectangle, that has the same dimensions width/length) as the contained ellipse, to overlap any other piece.. This can cause quite serious wastageLast edited by REALOldNick; 25th June 2012 at 04:10 PM. Reason: signed twice :)

Why not repost in the computers section of this forum where someone might have an idea what you're talking about?

Because this is about sheet cutting layout software. Most of the questions I see about sheet cutting software are in wood/metalworking forums, not software forums. I thought there would be interest about this sort of stuff in this area.
This seems to be a very good piece of sheet cutting software and I assumed that it would be known.
A quick look at the software forum left me thinking it was about anything but woodwork.Nick

Hi Nick
I am not familiar with this software and it has been some years since I used an optimising programme. I used to find that it was almost always possible to find a manual solution with a better yield, however that took time so it was usually better to accept the solution and get on with something else. After all if you have to buy a sheet of board it really doesn't matter if you use 75% or 95% the input cost is the same.

I have found the yields pretty good with this and MaxCut. As you say they save a lot of time. I happily accept what they give me, whereas if I did it myself I would never trust me to get the best1
I agree about buying a whole board up to a point, but if you can leave as much as possible there is always the next job.Nick

Hi Nick
I had a look at the web site, it would appear that the 2D package is intended for square/rectangular pieces. If you have other shapes it looks like you should be using Profile.

Hi Nick
I am basing my opinion on the web site information i.e
GoNest 2D is a nesting software for generating optimized layouts and reducing scrap generated by 2 Dimensional Rectangular cutting (Guillotine cutting or nested) processes.
GoNest Profile is a true shape nesting software for generating optimized any shape layouts and reducing scrap generated by 2 Dimensional profile nested processes.

hmmm..that wording would explain why it only allows non-rectangular shapes to be placed so that their containing rectangles do not overlap, which is its biggest weakness. so far
The wording is ambiguous, at best, though. I wonder if they have developed and altered the programme without really fixing the basic rectangular basis. You can never cut an ellipse n a guillotine! But the programme definitely lays out ellipses.Nick

hmmm...I just tried Profile...I can't make head nor tail out of the stupid thing. IT _looks_ simple enough, I just can't get it to actually do anything.
