Small (but heavy) Coffee table
Recently acquired some slabs of Silky Oak. Included was one slab of some 90 mm thick which presented the challenge "make something of me" so herewith the result.
Size is 900mm X 800 mm
Finish is poly/wax/oil, final sand was 800 wet/dry
Joinery was double loose tennons which resulted in very good registration, only needing a cabinet scraper to remove any "steps". I have found this method to be superior to biscuits by a long way! Certainly avoids the need to lug 80kg of top to nearest big sanding machine!
The post was laminated from 4 x 40 mm thick pieces using loose tennons on 45 deg chamfers (actually 44.8 deg, so corners come together sharply) and feet were of forest redgum to provide a bit of contrast and a hard wearing surface.
