Yeah I've thought about the clamping situation and I could wedge 4mm scrap plywood against the shims to hold them in place while the glue dries. I'd use grease proof paper in between to stop them from sticking.
If I was to have false drawer fronts however, I would need thicker shims, I could just screw those into place rather than gluing?.
