Need help finding specialty castors, please
Hi,
I'm looking to build a two step stool for a Christmas present. Planning on building it out of KD -- but to be safe for a working load of 100-150kg it's goingt get a bit heavy. What I'd like to find is some of those castors that they put on "kick stools" used in libraries that retract when weight is put on the stool. I've spent a fair time Googling and haven't had any joy. Can someone point me to an Australian supplier of these beasts?
Thanks,
-Don

Hi Don,
I know exactly what you are after, i made something similar about a year back and wanted the exact type of castor you are looking for. Sadly i wasn't able to locate one either. I ended up going for shaft style castors and then buying some springs to keep them extended beyond the base of the steps. I cobbled together a retaining system with some washers that i cut into a c-shape (just cut out one end of the washer) and then crimped onto a detent in the shaft. It sort of works for my weight but not really for my wife. I'm sorry but i don't have any pictures of the castor arrangement.

The concept is sound but it needs to be engineered better as the shafts are a bit loose in their housing (just a drilled hole in the timber) and tend to stick at times. The ladder ones someone else here posted seem like a decent design if they came in something vertical, not angled.
Anyway, just wanted to share my experience. I hope you have better luck. Please do post if you find something like what you're looking for.
Good Luck
Mat
