    Default Horse powered apple crusher

I think this project qualifies as a big thing

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:To...J%C3%A8rri.jpg

I want to build one of these in wood in time for autumn. Last autumn some friends and I made up 40L of apple juice from wild apples and made cider. We used kitchen blenders and a very small press that was capable of producing a small amount of thrust. This autumn I want to do things in a bigger way hence the need for a for scale grinder.

I can get logs to be milled for this project in pine, redwood, cypress, messmate, pepermint, manna or grey box (I think possibly yellow have to check). I think I can also get some recycled timbers that were wharf timbers and are really, really hard (turpentine, box, iron bark?).

Any suggestions on where to start for a a design and then construction?

You could try and get in touch with The Common Ground cafe in Rozelle in Sydney. They have a big hand cranked apple press that is a feature at their restaurant at the royal easter show. It is all made of wood and produces the best clear fresh apple juice that you will ever see. Good luck with it.

Wow, that looks great, but what is the scale? It looks like its four or five metres across, that wheel would have to be heavy enough to crush apples easily, and the horse could not turn in real small circles..... How big is your horse?

Have you googled on cider press? There are lots of basket press designs, like grape presses.

Years ago my parents made cider every year - dad just bought apple juice from a local cannery. Now perhaps you can do a deal with the local juice shop - their commercial juicers are real quick.

    Cheers

Well I'd say it would have to be at least a radius of 1.5m.

The horse will be a small pony or possibly the wife

The press is another machine again. First the apples must be crushed and the mush "pomace" is pressed to separate the flesh of the apple from the juice.

Oh a point I should mention is that it cant be held together with iron fixings because they contaminate the cider.

This is a more modest setup for the home brew person.

First of all I wants me a big one. Not really interested in modest. I've done modest now I want to do big.

The pages you guys have referred me to are for apple PRESSES not apple CRUSHERS. Before the apples can be pressed they must be crushed. Once crushed the pulp is loaded into the press and then pressed to get the juice out of the pomace (apple or pear pulp). The machine I want to reproduce does the same job as the guy with 4x4 and bucket in the previous link supplied by Orraloon but it does it really efficiently and really well. The big heavy wheel squashes the apples to a fine mushy paste which means that more liters of juice are extracted from a given quantity of apples than with other methods.

The idea behind the 4x4 and bucket crusher is a good one but its massively exhuasting. Modern cider apple crushers use this method to crush apples but they are arrayed in banks like gold ore crushing mills.
