Jacaranda hanging wall shelf
I had a go at making this wall shelf following an article by Peter Turner. There is no WIP but not really having a suitable saw to attempt the sliding dovetails by hand I made up some jigs following plans from a Robert Wearing book for doing the joints with a small handheld router.
I'm quite happy with the result, the grain of the Jacaranda doesn't really show up in the photo, but it gets quite wild. I'm pondering what finish to apply. At the moment I'm thinking a water based poly might be the best to keep the grain visible.
I made my shelves slightly deeper than the original, 155mm vs 110mm, with an overall height of 1025mm.

The intention is to eventually install the shelf on a wall near the new kitchen to hold a cordless phone base and be a place to charge phones, leave keys etc. I wanted something that wasn't going to protrude too deeply into the traffic area and was more user friendly than a cluttered small desk space.Franklin

I tested a couple of finishes on scraps. In the end there really didn't appear to be a substantial colour difference between a Polyurethane finish and the other oil finishes. I decided trying to brush poly around all the shelves was going to be problematic with handling and dribbles so opted for one of the oil finishes. I had an old can of Feast Watson China Oil (now Tung Oil) that I THINK gave the clearest finish but I doubted there was enough left in the can to do two coats. Rather than risking it, I ended up using Danish oil.
The oil seemed to go on the larger surfaces a bit blotchy, but drying out over a week has evened things out substantially and the grain swirls now pop quite nicely.
