G`Day Terry
The photography side of things is sometimes harder, and definately more frustrating, than actually building the piece being photographed
I got some thin see through quilting from a fabric store and just taped that over the halogen lights to diffuse the direct light a little.
I use 3 of those cheap twin light sets from bunnings, usually setting one on each side of the table, and the third one quite close (out of camera shot) & directed towards the table top, without the quilting on it. So it`s a direct light on there, to try and make the grain pop out a little in the pics.
I sometimes aim one or 2 of the lights at the ceiling or even remove a globe if it`s too bright.
Camera wise i`m using an SLR Canon 7D with a 15-85 lens and a 28mm prime lens.
A reasonably priced SLR is the canon 550D with the 18-55 Lens kit,
Canon EOS Kiss X4 550D Kit+EFS 18-55mm IS+Battery+UV (eBay item 130483493868 end time 08-Mar-11 17:13:19 AEDST) : Cameras
I allmost allways use the aperture priority mode (AV Mode) this way all you need to adjust is the aperture setting, everything else is automatic.
I set the aperture anywhere from f3.5 to f9 and see which works best, usually the lower the better for me. But take plenty of shots at different settings.
The ISO setting will make a difference to the brightness too, keep it around 100 or 200 if possible.
I usually shoot with the flash off, and let the lights do the work.
Sometimes the flash can make the grain pop out, but i mostly prefer to use the lights.
A decent SLR camera will really make a huge difference, i allways used to struggle with my smaller auto camera.
I hope this helps mate,
