Default Jarrah Floating Top Coffee Table

Here are some pics of the jarrah coffee table that I made to give to a friend for Christmas.

The design is adapted from the hallway table featured in Dec 2012 Fine Woodworking Magazine.

Here is a link to the readers section of the FWW website where I also posted it.

Once I had the stock rough cut by machine, the rest of the work was done by hand tools. The top dimensions are 600x400.

My friends were wrapped to receive it. They thought it was nice enough to bump the ikea one out of the way

It's a nice table, John, I would have liked a couple of pics of the sides and looking across under the top though. What finish did you use?

    Regards,

    Rob

Thank you. Finished with 3 coats of Danish Oil. I never thought of side on pics. I'll get some next time I see them and will post them.

    Default Table design

It's a **very** nice table. The design is very 60's and would not suit every decor, but that does not detract from the quality of the final product... What a great Christmas gift! Can I be your friend John? I have this IKEA wall unit...

Nice work on the details - the through tenons, the beveled top and the curved legs. I looked at that table myself and really like the design, but as you can tell from my signature - anything but Jarrah! Your friends are very lucky folk.
    Shine on you crazy diamond!

I milled a piece of 3x4" flooring joice into boards. Then biscuit joined to approx width. Next I scrub planed and went over with my #5 and #7 planes. Then for ease (I was feeling like a short cut by now!), I took it to the local men's shed and ran it through their 600mm finishing sander, giving me 18mm of thickness. The chamfer, including the curved ends, were done with the low angle block plane.

The frame was rough milled and finished with the scrub, #5, #7 and smoothing planes. Tenons cut with my Japanese dovetail saw and chiseled out.

I think that covers it all

I have discovered how great a low angle block plane is...if you don't have one, you really should get one!

Thanks John, that was a lot of hard yakka, but it has shown to be worthwhile with a magnificent table

Very nice John, floating top tables are a favorite of mine. But I'm still yet to make one.
