Oddjob I think that your concerns are overstated. My bed has two stretchers and slats. Good mattress, not a problem.

Updated sketch -
* Stretchers trimmed to 150x40 at joints, and 130x40 on the span. Moved apart to 1200, leaving ~300 overhang on each side.
* Left the foot and headboards off on purpose, not sure what I'll do with them yet.
* Not sure about the strips over the slats. I like the look, but it may turn out to be too much of a PITA.
Thoughts?

Build it
artme is probably right, when it comes to a good nights sleep I choose to stick with tried and true. My thought is to build a prototype and give it a go, too bad all that nice detail is covered up by the quilt.

Agree. They won't be seen and your effort will not be rewarded.
I like your revised design and I reckon 300m overhang is fine. Consider that more stress is focused on the side of the matress when you're getting on/off and putting on your socks than when you're sleeping. This need to be considered more strongly than the stress of normal use I think."Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."

big bed
Hmm, looks ok... [ie prettier & more proportionate] but lots of joints to chop out there mate and it'll ALL be under the mattress! But...cool jigsaw for the kids to put together.
Sorry PITA?? please explain! [I'm new on here.... and a bit slow.]
but I DO know this one: KISS!....and try and live by it....
[but that's just me]
Best,
richie

Your picture bed1r, I have seen something like this before, years ago and from old memory made of lighter timber than what you are considering though. The part that reminded me, and I suspect your error, was the 4 main stretchers running the length and the head board construct. That is what you had in that picture but not the others.
Again memory the bed I am thinking of had 3 head boards, (poss 4??) and no tail boards. I think it only had 4 feet. I doubt it had more as it was one of those flashy Swedish one off design that cost a mint.
With respect to you latest design personally I would not bother with the top strips, as has been pointed out, work no one will see to enjoy.
But in those way past days, bed design was the last thing on my mind.

Interesting...don't think I've ever seen that done before...

Footboard will be minimal if anything. I sleep with my feet hanging off the end, and I hate having my feet hitting something solid.

I do know the head boards were not high, painful experience and the giggles, (not mine), that followed..
