    Default Kitchen Island Help

    Hi,
I’m designing a small open kitchen island and want some input from people with more experience than I.
I am trying to decide on the size of the timber that I need for the legs and aprons. To start with I’ll be using Blackbutt for the whole thing and it will be joined by mortise and tenon joints.
The long side aprons will be about 900mm and the short sides will be 500mm. The legs are going to be 850mm heght. I want the frame to be sturdy and don’t know if I need thick aprons and legs. I’ve seen lots of tables with heavy 4x4 legs and 2x4 aprons, but I was thinking going of using 2x4s for the legs and 1x4s for the aprons.
Should this be ok, or is this even excessive?
    Thanks for the input!!

The sizes you have in mind will be OK, but the finished island may look a bit spindely.

The key to the island being rigid will be very well fitting joints
