Kitchen Table WIP
The brief from older daughter calls for a table 1400 x 800 in a "contemporary design", so here's what I have in mind........65mm wide planks of NGR for the top & off-white painted rails & legs with clean simple lines which would set off the natural timber top. I have milled the planks for the top to 22mm and the glue up is almost complete.
The question now is how to finish the edges. I am thinking either a square edge with 3mm radius top & bottom or using a 10mm round over bit to produce a fully rounded edge. The question is which would look better.
Or is there another better way?

It is a beautiful table top. Personally I like the edges square and slightly planed/sanded. Rounding over an edge is a lazy way of doing things because it is easy to do. They don't look professional in most cases.
I like NGR a lot and isn't it crazy how different they look.

Hi Glider,
What they said. I think the top is too thin to round over, (2 x 10mm) and would not like good. A 40/45mm top does not look too bad with a big radius, (just my opinion), but thinner ones not.
Just a very small radius or hand sand I reckon.
I like to give more attention to the 4 corners, with more of a radius, particularly to the bottom corner point, it can be a good height for little kids to whack their noggin on.
Cheers

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like the 10mm roundover is out. With a planed edge & hand sand, I am likely to end up with somewhere close to the other alternative of a 3mm radius. I'm not looking forward to planing the end grain, I might add.
Little peoples' heads are pretty safe with a 25mm overhang from the rails but larger ones' hips are definitely on the radar. The solution is either a 20mm per side chamfer on the corners or a minimum 5-10mm radius. I think the rad. will better suit the cleaner contemporary design. Any ideas?
I originally wanted to do a minimum 30mm top but the 50 x 150 stock I bought meant too much waste & weight.

Stay tuned Boz. Last night's design update meeting changed the legs from straight to tapered. No arguments from me. She takes after her mother with a good eye for quality & design.

The legs and frame are all made & I'm waiting for the glue to dry. The wooden buttons for the top are also done and ready for the final assembly.
The base will be painted probably off white & I am now thinking about a clear gel finish for the top. Originally I was going to use Danish Oil with a finish coat of beeswax but I read in a finishing book that this type of thing is not really suitable for a high usage surface. I'm still not really convinced. Anyone have any experience on similar items?

I haven't finished yet. Cool name BTW.
So far we have two coats of Danish Oil on each side which has brought up the colour beautifully. Tomorrow I will give it a light sand down to 600 grit & start waxing. I hope to fill in the open grain in the process. More pics soon.

Finally done.
The top is NGR finished with two coats Danish Oil both sides, waxed and buffed. Legs & rails painted in off white satin enamel.
