    Default Ladder chair

Back home in Greece it's very common to see colourful chairs in restaurants and cafes

Ιt's a very old school look that I kind of miss, plus most furniture in my house are painted (white) anyway. And I like the chair-ladder idea.

I never made a chair before, because, well, I never made much before

But I decided to give it a go.

I bought some standard stuff from Bunnings (30mm pine & 19mm oak) and some Grand Turquoise extra deep gloss enamel by British Paints, and this is what I ended up with:

In theory my construction plan was simple, just route dados in the legs and slide the horizontal surfaces in, assemble with screws at first to pull them in, and when i's all glued and dried replace the screws with dowels.

In practice everything that could go wrong went wrong, especially when I decided to add oak tops at the top and bottom ends, completely forgetting that this would change the dimensions of the legs and the chair would not sit flat on the floor anymore.

    Duh.

But it was fun and I really enjoyed it in the end. In hindsight all parts could be a little thinner because it ended up a bit on the heavy side (hence the cutout on the seat for lifting it, which was also an afterthought)

Maybe when I make another one, because everyone who's seen it now wants one, which is probably a good sign

    C&C welcome!

Thanks. Not mine though, it's been around forever, rumour has it it was first designed by Benjamin Franklin.
Some people actually call it the Benjamin Franklin chair.

Not withstanding who designed the chair, your result is very good.
I think that you are onto a winner and I'm sure that you will be making plenty more.

    Regards

Very nice. The small timber accents on the top and bottom of the legs really set it off. I'm adding this to my 'pinch later' bookmarks as well.
