Long and low toy box come seat...
Hi all,
We have a 2 year old and I am thinking of building a bench style toy chest, but a fairly long one 6' x 2' x 2'.
We want to keep it low so she can climb up on it to sit as my wife is going to sort out a cushion for the lid.
I am wondering if anyone has built anything similar and has any tips?
As I mentioned in some other posts I am new to this and don't have all the tools, but I reckoned this would be a fairly simple frame of say 2"x2" and then clad the sides in tongue-in-groove flooring with an mdf lid since it will have the aforementioned cushion on it.
Any tips, tricks or pics of other similar projects would really be appreciated.
Thanks!
Scott

Hi there Scott, if you are just going to make a simple box and you are going to use T&G flooring (19mm) don't worry about making a frame, waste of wood & $, besides it will eat into your inside space. Use four 90 X 45 as corner posts and rebate the T&G into the sides. I have done this many times and it looks ok, havn't got a pic where I am at the moment but if you are interested I can post a couple later on.
Dills.
I have added some pic's. In relation to the concerns over the length of the box and weather it would "walk", if the boards are straight the sides should stay that way, the base will tie it all together. In theory anyway.

Dills, don't you think over that span that the floorboards will want to walk?

That sounds like a good idea, the only problem I would have is not having the tool to make the rebates
What kind of tool do I need for that and generally speaking, would it be less, more or equally expensive as 50' of 1x1?
Cheers,
Scott

The tool is just a router, hand held or set up in a table. The 19 mm straight bit is perfect for the T&G floor boards. I think you are refering to the cost of a router verses making a frame for your box. All I can say is that a good router is very versatile, almost a must as part of your hand held tools. 1/4 " collet is plenty big enough for the home handyman. Good luck with it Scott.
Dills.

Another way to get the rebate without using a router, is to attach two smaller pieces of timber to the corner post, with enough room for the slats to slide into. Nowhere near as effective or as neat/tidy, buuuuut it would still work. You could even use contrasting timber, if you liked the look of it.
cheers
