Looking good Derek, like Alex said, make sure you have a big bottle of oil.
Looking forward to see what you do with the legs
artme is your table an actual Nakashima or a copy of one of his? I have been waiting to find the right piece of timber to do a George or a George with a twist. I don't like doing exact copys

We've got legs
I finally committed myself to a leg design. As a newbie, I was very careful cutting the mortice and tenon into the slab and am happy with the result, a nice tight vertical joint. The tap is to prevent tear-out when I cut the rebate for the front leg.
The rail and front leg are just sitting there for effect and will be finished next weekend.
cheers for now

Claw, my table is an actual Nakashima.
I had bought some timber for the legs and was going to do an "artme" version of the table.
Priced the glass top !!
Then SWMBO was in Melbourne and found a real George on special for much less than the glass would have cost - and that included frieght.
So- we have the real McCoy and I have some spare timber

Sadly Nakashima had departed by the time we bought this.

This is looking really good. What joint have you used to to attach the small leg to the rail.
I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

Thanks again for everyone's comments, it's appreciated.
At both ends, I used a bridle joint over the bottom rail and the tops are a M&T joint into the slab. The joints are recessed down into the rail to provide strength and prevent "racking".
As my first major piece, I wanted to keep the joints simple so I could concentrate on accuracy and build my confidence.Last edited by derekh; 13th December 2010 at 10:22 PM. Reason: elaborated on bridle joint

Oiling finished and now waiting 7 days before I apply the wax finish. I'm very happy with the China Wood Oil and how it has enriched the colour
