    Default Mrs Mate’s cabinet

Wow, it HAS been a long time since I posted! I’ve been a bit consumed with my other hobbies recently like scanning and publishing from my and my father’s aviation photo collection.....

..... but, a mate’s wife is in need of a utility cabinet to replace one that stands by the door and collects the days’ essentials as people pass. It has defined external dimensions but the rest was up to me except for “nothing fancy please” and Bunnings material is perfectly acceptable. I designed a simple, adjustable cabinet which consists of 3 vertical frames with cupboards and shelves suspended between them.
I started today, used my new Kapex to cut the frames and Domino to join...

.... and set up a simple jig to cut the slots on the inside of the frames that provide the adjustability....

The frames were then glued and clamped and, by knock off time tonight, the cabinet was temporarily assembled...

To provide rigidity and prevent racking, there will be 2 small cupboards with one in each bay that use 4 of the 8 cut shelves as their tops and bottoms The cupboards will be able to be moved up or down between the frames and take up 4 of the notched spacings cut on the inside of the frame. The finish will be clear gloss and I hope to have it finished tomorrow?

I got it ‘mechanically’ finished today but couldn’t spray the clear finish due to rain.

The cupboard modules now have 12mm thick plywood backs to prevent the whole cabinet from racking but I think I’ll change the plywood doors to 20mm thick solid pine to better suit the full overlap euro hinges?

It rained again today in my ‘spray booth’ so all finished except for the clear finish? I won’t drill the shelf support holes inside the cupboards until after the finish is applied.

Sunshine, no wind and no virus today so I was able to spray water-based clear finish outdoors. It dried quickly although water-based clear finishes always seem to raise the grain and so it was all sanded and given a second coat. I’m calling it finished and, with a material cost less than $150 the client is very happy!

I’m feeling a little chuffed! It has just been pointed out to me how close the back-of-a-beer-coaster sketch and the final product are! I wish I’d remembered that I’d done the sketch?

The Mrs Mate’s furniture range continues to grow! The specification this time was only the envelope, 1200w x 700h x 600d to support their sons SNAKE ENCLOSURE!

Now, snakes and I don’t mix, I know they have their role to play in the great order of things but that doesn’t mean I have to like nor even appreciate them so this time they will be picking up and applying the clear finish.

I am reluctantly accepting of red-bellied blacks passing through the shed paddock but last week Django, the dog next door, had an encounter with an eastern brown and proudly presented his owners with the evidence at their back door!
Now that’s a whole different state of affairs!

Fletty, just remember that your next door neighbour's dog has to find the brother / sister / mother / father / cousin / uncle / aunty etc of the snake he found, preferably before they find you!

Will it ever be safe in the shed or backyard?

Maybe Santa could bring you a flame thrower, could come in handy.

    Be careful.
