Maximize competition piece
I have been working on this for the last three weeks, it is based on an original Japanese antique low table which was featured in AWW issue 32, the timber I had, the design and the way I wanted to make it ticked a few of the boxes for the comp so I thought give it a go, I doubt it will win anything but maybe an honourable mention (I hope it's ok to post pics of it, should be shouldn't it?)
Started with a few 75x25 rough sawn silver wattle boards (acacia dealbata I believe) close relative to blackwood (a. melanoxylon)

and finished with this, needs a few more coats of oil tho

I have in between WIP pics if forumites are interested
I am interested in opinions on the overhang of the table top, the original had 140mm on the end and only 40 on the sides, I wouldv'e thought something close to equal overhang might be more normal, maybe that is a western view of things?

Hi Pete,
I cant comment on the overhang as what I dont know about Japaneese furnature would take all day to list. It is a great bit of woodworking and I do like the top. Is it full thickness or did you overlay a veneer. It looks great.
Regards
John

The overhang may have more to do with how the table is used in Japan than aesthetics.
The table looks great though.
Would love to see the WIP pics. Those were the droids I was looking for.

That's a stunning effect on the top!
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Thanks everyone, good to know others like it, I think it came up well too.
The top is laminated with ~2mm thick veneers onto a torsion box, this fits well with the theme of the comp, (make more from less)
I only had 2 flatsawn boards with that stripe pattern which wasn't enough even when I cut them into slices, so I added a nice dark 1/4 sawn board to give it some contrast and make it look like a handheld fan, keeping in the theme of things Japanese.
Here's a few pics of the process....
making the torsion box, basically it's just two skins separated by somesort of gridwork,
I started by making up some ladders which then became the grid....

I added some blocks so I can screw the top down, skins are 6mm 3 ply
Attachment 149036Attachment 149037Attachment 149038
The laminate top...
I sliced the first two boards into about 7 or 8 pieces, thickness sanded, cut them into a wedge shape, planed the edges of the piece, then glued them into a larger fan segment, thickness sander again, then made up as one sheet ready to be glued to the box....

A few pics of leg stuff,
These ones are the glue up, 5 pieces, squared up leg blank 2 sides only, leg blank and the mortices cut
Attachment 149511Attachment 149512Attachment 149513
I did the mortices on the spinle moulder, I used a spiral cutter , a straight fluted cutter is a bit, set the fence away from the cutter, make marks on the fence showing cutter pos. and length of travel and set up stops, the block does need to be spot on length in this sort of set up
Attachment 149514
I bandsawed the straight square portion of the leg on the big bandsaw first, then cut the curve portion on the little one with the help of a jig, I don't have to mark out the curve this way, but is good practice to do so
Attachment 149515Attachment 149516
Gluing on the veneers, I used the offcut from the curve cutting to use as the former for applying pressure across the face of the veneer and lots of clamps, I also cut some kerfs in the former in the curve portion
