    Default Mark.1 Saw Draws

    ... or ... a library is born?

Anyone who knows me won't read any of that as confidence. More hope.

There was all this pine from very large "pallets" sitting in a skip and while I have generally avoided picking up pine ... I did have an increasing inclination towards this SawDraw idea.

And it wasn't going to wash to drag it home and not get into using it up PDQ ... so here we are.
I can't say it'll be too flash. I have an air-nailer and I'm prepared to use it.

But then, the very fluffy pine seems to plane off to not a bad surface.
I suppose over time it will turn from white to that urghhh yellow colour.

But ... here is the raw material ...

    20150929_120933.jpg 20150929_120945.jpg

and here is as much inspiration as I have conceived of to this point ...

Ah ha! I have an inclination of where this is going. I see storage, storage, storage . (Half a tick, I think you said that. It must have been subliminal .)

Why don't you run the boards through that thicknesser of yours. It would eat that pine in no time.

Yep. This is what 36" x 17" x 8" is good for (a bit overstuffed actually).

    20151004_090929.jpg

    So maybe 10" per draw ... there's 2.3m to the ceiling ... so 8 or 9 drawers.

I hadn't thought of this until now, but I have said before how much I like the Barristers Bookcase idea (... I keep spotting them in movies and tv shows). It would make sense to make them modular in one or two drawer sections.

Although that messes with my initial idea of gluing up the 2m+ lengths of pine vertically to make the casing. Hmmm.

Why don't you run the boards through that thicknesser of yours. It would eat that pine in no time.
I have a tinpot-screamer, I mean lunchbox thicknesser, which screams horrendously compared to the old beast ... but I figured I'd probably use that. I wasn't sure the furry pine was going to plane up to much ... but it'll definitely do for this job I reckon.

Lunch box thicknesser. That is such a good description . I had one that I abused horribly for four years and then spent another four years of worse abuse waiting for it to die, which it did: Eventually.

I used to apologise to the neighbour regularly and where possible wait until they were not at home. She told me not to worry as if the noise reached nuisance level she would just increase the volume of her music: It was a deal.

I think you will be surprised at how well the furry pine will clean up. It may not be premium grade, but quite passable for purpose.

That lunchbox took up some time on sunday. All my big machines sit outside under covers. The little thicky was sat under the tablesaw.
It didn't want to shift height, under only gentle persuasion ... so a bit of stripping and spraying took place.

20151004_152621.jpg Only real issue in the end was the bevel gears underneath to work the second screw. Nylon.

I have a plan to sort that, but for now just adjusted both screws by hand.

This is the result halfway through ... not the same as handplaning, but a start. 20151004_180942.jpg
    (again with the picture orientation)

So far 15 x 2m boards, with 11 more I haven't deconstructed plus sundry shorter lengths.

Each board is 95mm wide, so two glued up to 190mm looks like making the drawers ... plus some hardwood edging maybe.

I'm thinking the carcase for holding the drawers can just be an open framework, as long as it is made stiff enough.

Those nylon bevel gears are replaceable. I have quite a few of them as I replaced them in my machine.
Let me know if you want some and I will send them to you. My machine is a Timbercon and I also have a Ryobi version, but I suspect they are all the same.

I was given this Ryobi thicknesser long ago ... more solid than the orange one I bought ... due to a break in the casting.
    It has aluminium bevel gears.

But if you can get replacements for the orange one, that sounds cool.

Inspirational notes: I like drawers that dip at the front ... or have a cut-out at least ...

Somewhat like what I am thinking of ... but more solid and 3-dimensional than this ... plus draw-slides ...

Some testing out ... bottom layer planed, cut and put together in a bit of a rush before we had to go out.
Second layer put together in the garage at 10pm afterwards as quietly as possible, hence rough.

External dimensions - width 104cm ... seems like a good size. depth 48cm. height 19cm (atm sitting on a 12mm plywood base)

How much weight will be a relevant issue ... I weighed the front and balanced the back.
Looks like roughly 35kg for these 27 saws and the timber.

I hadn't considered how much weight we were talking, I think.

I have 5 sets of full-extension drawer slides ... pretty heavy duty ... they extend about 50ish cm.

    20151006_000629 (Medium).jpg

and ten sets of short, very heavy duty slides with a throw of only 22cm.

    20151006_000614 (Medium).jpg

Testing with one the jarrah drawers, this is how much access 22cm yields ...

    20151006_000749 (Medium).jpg 20151006_000800 (Medium).jpg

or now I have the drawer mockup ...

I had initially pictured a minimal, open framework ... but the weight issue has had me reconsidering.

I will make them stackable. Still considering whether to make a 4-, 3- or 2-drawer first up.

Given that it is going to have sides, it could possibly be aimed towards the "furniture" end of the looks scale.
That's a problem, because then I'll be pondering around about the details of the looks.

I'd been meaning to get around to "shopping" through Google Images for cabinet carcases for inspiration.

Here's an initial pic (from here https://breenbushdesign.wordpress.co...binet-project/) that resonates at the utility quality end.
I think there has to be horizontal supports at each level, although I hadn't initially been picturing that.

and the look of this aquarium stand might not be too far from the end result ... (http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums...-169541-3.html)
