    Default Another Morris Chair

Michael Jr's post of 22 July inspired me to post my own project.

Like Michael I used few power tools: A circular saw, drill press and a band saw to cut the bend in the arms.

I got the plans off a magazine, but modified them to suit my short legs - otherwise I would slouch in the chair - I also modified it so that I could use standard Australian sizes (19, 32, 90 mm etc) - That means that the chair is quite different to what's in the plans.

The timber is Victorian Ash (sometimes called Tasmanian Oak or just Tassie Oak), which means its neither Ash nor Oak, but its readily available in Australia pretty nice to work with.

The way that the bend in the arms is achieved is really clever, and so is the way that the mortices are achieved for the many little rails.

I also made the cushions - When I show off the chair to female friends, they always say "OOOH! did you make the cushions?" Hours of woodwork and they are impressed by the cushions.

About a year later I made the ottoman.

Hope you like the pictures and are inspired to make your own...

Very, very, very nice, you've done a great job of it. The Morris Chair has been on my bucket list for a while, it's a very stylish chair. Thanks for showing your build.

Thank you for the comment SJT,

The original plans are in Australian Woodsmith # 41 August September 2005.

The plans call for pinned tenons on the legs and through tenons with a pointed, pyramid shape end on the legs through the arm rest, both at the back and on the horizontal part at the front.

The through tenons are a nice little detail, but I decided to give it a miss... Where was I going to put my beer while watching the rugby???

That's where I noticed the original plans, thanks for reminding me. My biggest question though, is the chair comfortable?

Very impressive, having just completed mine I can see the quality of your build!

The arms are nice. My plan called for laminating strips to form a bend. Didn't attempt it as I don't have a bandsaw. Should've scaled it down though, the chair is massive, but is comfy.

    Ottoman, hmmm...

Very comfortable. I use it everyday. If you use the Woodsmith plans, I suggest you adjust the length of the sides to suit your legs. I'm only a short fella... so I shortened the sides by about 10 cm. If I hadn't then I would be slouching in the chair or propping myself up with extra cushions.

Yes, that's how its done... I asked someone to cut the wedges for me with their bandsaw. It may be possible to do it without a band saw by laminating a pre amde wedge on the underside (not enough room for a plane), and using a plane on the upperside of the arm rest.

    Very nice work
These chairs are also on my todo list. I need to make a pair though.
You've inspired me to bump it up the list.
Those were the droids I was looking for.
