I found this US seller on eBay that might interest you for the acme threaded rod. These are 3/4" diameter in 3ft lengths for roughly $74AUD shipped.

I do enjoy building furniture with dovetailing challenges.

    Good Morning Derek

Love the radiussed dovetails in the carcase. I have also been experimenting with this joint and suggest that if you make the base of the pins and tails exactly the same length then the effect is even more intriguing. You cannot differentiate between pins and tails - solicits a how did he do that or just another joint reaction.

What's the wood in the carcase? In the photo it looks like celery top pine, but you are in WA?

Finally, a bit of conjecture. Do I detect some pre-planning for a small Krenov style cabinet with radiussed internal dovetail corners?

    Best Wishes

Graeme, actually the "curve" referred to bow fronts, and not the dovetailed case sides, per se.

The externally rounded dovetails began when the following coffee table was chosen by a nephew when I offered to build something as a wedding present ...

That particular design did not have dovetails, but what looked like a rounded corner section. The while piece was likely made in ply. Since I prefer to work with solid wood, I choice to create rounded ends - i.e. rounded through dovetails. These received an internal filler to continue the round ...

The effect of allowing the figure to flow around the case is really quite striking, especially in the figured curly Jarrah ...

The difficulty with this joint is that there is no room for error, since the timber does not compress to create a tight joint. The same could be said for the piece I linked to, which was the last piece I built (Harlequin Table) ...

This case is USA Hard Maple, and it has buggah all compression as well.

Still, these rounded dovetails are straight forward as long as you mark and saw accurately. The complicated parts are mitres on the corners. These are game changers as far as dovetailed cases go. See here: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Furnitu...quinTable.html

The real complex dovetailing is the drawers that must fit a bow fronted case.

This is what happens when transferring tails to pins ...

    Details here: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Furnitu...tWeekend8.html

I've now completed a few pieces where the dovetails are compound angles. The Lingerie Chest had both bow fronts and angled sides.

The point here is that dovetailing can become a crucial element in a design. Perhaps 200 years ago, dovetails were considered ho-hum ... just a way of joining boards together and had no bragging rights. There are some who today want to minimise their importance. That is fine by me ... as long as it is pertinent within their design envelope. In cases, such as the ones I show, the art of dovetailing is an important feature, and a fun skill to develop. It is in the context of this that I decided to build a new Moxon dovetail vise. I love the challenge of complex joinery, and this new Moxon just makes it more fun.

    Regards from Perth
