Mum's Birthday
Thought I'd share the keen interest that my young grandson has in woodwork and for that matter, all things DIY. He's 6 years old and is making a present for Mum for her birthday in a fortnight. The original timber was sized for him, and the small pieces cut on the mitre saw as he's a wee bit too young for that yet. He has had a hand in cutting out some of the octagonal shapes, and apart from that he has basically been sanding all pieces and assembling the articles. Mum's birthday gift is a set of 7 button boxes (idea from magazine) and boxes filled with her favourite chocolates for THE day.
So far, the basic box has been assembled, today the lids were cut out and the small interior pieces cut out and glued in, these keep the lids in place. A few pics of the items and the lad at work.

Absolutely fantastic and big for the little guy. Good to see another generation showing an interest. My 5 year old loves to help out in the workshop, especially with sweeping up all my shavings .

Good looking grandson you have there.
Must be nice to have someone who wants to do what grandpa does not just play games on the computer or watch telly.
I envy you (I don't have any family)
Cheers

Reminds me of when I was five, had to have a tool box with tools and have smoko outside like working men! Went to work with dad and would bang nails into a block of wood for the day.
A doer in the making

Mum's Birthday.
Thanks to all. Young Oliver has seen himself on the forum and has read the replying posts. We are all very proud of him and his achievements.
He spent today with me making the lids for the boxes, and sanding them in preparation for spraying with clear poly. Tomorrow after school, he will be fitting the little home made knobs to the lids and spraying the boxes. Will take some more photos then.
This afternoon was a bit busy for us both, another of my grandsons has taken the plunge and gotten engaged officially today, so family gathering.
More on the morrow

Yep, definitely was the order of the day when I was a kid too....nothing beter than being with Dad at work making cupboards for the new house or building a chook house or dairy bails or meat safe (the outdoors type). Pity that there appears to be less of it happening today. Maybe a sign of the frenetic pace at which the mainstream lives?

Mum's Birthday
Today, Oliver finished his first real woodwork project!
The final sanding was done on the nboxes, knobs fitted to the lids. and a small tray to hold the boxes was knocked up and edged.
Then came the spray can. We had allowed for only one can. but in the interest of getting and even coat acroos all, a second can will be necessary.
Pics of the completion and fiinished article (except for another coat of poly)attached.
We are all very proud of his work, and the way in which he went about it.

I was looking for this one project since you mention it on the forum stand. Now that it is complete I find it.
Well done on the boxes Oliver.

Good to see. 4yo granddaughter came to the workshop wanting shavings, so I gave her a block plane and some wood and showed her how to make her own. Then got her spreading glue on some boxes I was gluing up.
When I was about 4, I lived in a small mining town in FNQ. (Mt. Mulligan). At some stage a house was being built next door, and I used to go across and the chippies would do the same thing. They'd also give me a a tin can and get me to scrape the loose dirt out of the holes for the stumps. A few years later the mine closed down and all the houses were transported by rail to Collinsville.
A couple of years ago I visited the now ghost town. Found the location of our old house, with only concrete steps remaining, and the concrete stumps of the house next door still standing after nearly 60 years. Guess I did a good job.
