    Default Wip

After some good advise from you guys I have started on the frame, I first cut the edges of the slab with my circular saw then around to my mates workshop to have a go at all his terrific woodwork machines, into the thicknesser to guage it all, then on the bench planer to level the inner edge, and onto the sanding machine to get a smooth finish to both front and back, oh to have all these tools, then the fun started with working out the 45s so I could achieve matching sizes and to match the sapwood and features in the wood so it looks as one.
This took a couple of hrs of braindrain nut I got a good result in the end, cut the mitres in the compound saw, then off to the benchsaw for the rebates, all good so far and I willo be back today to play with some more great tools, Oh to have a shed set up like Ians, hope you enjoy the pics, as I had a ball doing this so far

    Default progress

All glued up and ready to fit steel plate to back, learnt to make jig for router and to use router for the first time, after setting up the jig and routing I pre drilled the holes and glued the steel plate then added the countersunk screws, can't see it moving from here, a quick measurement sees the job less than half a mm out of square, so pretty happy with the progress so far, have included a couple more WIP pics, still having fun doing this

Excellent - that's fantastic - although I don't know why you want to spoil all that theory with actual practise ...

When I saw this pic I thought it'll be very nice ...

Did you make the plates yourself?

    Cheers,
    Paul

That's coming out quite well. What type of finish are you thinking of applying?

Was thinking Danish or scandinavian oil as sugested, but open to ideas as this is all pretty new to me, I have been using Sickens for other projects but that will take away the light colour of the Marri, as it has a yellowish colour

You might want to experiment a little on some off cuts.

I have read on this forum that white Shellac does not change the colour of the wood. I have not used it myself as yet, but it on my to do list. Can get this from Ubeaut.

That is awesome progress - it would take me a month to get to that stage - well done!!

I particularly like the accuracy of the mitre joints. What special precautions did you use to get them spot on?

I prefer a few coats of Wattyl Scandinavian Oil wiped in with steel wool, followed by EEE Ultrashime cutting compound, with Traditional Wax - that really brings the figure and the grain out, much better than Danish Oil, as well as feeling silky smooth.
    regards,

    Dengy

Cheers guys, For the mitres I used a compound saw, I cut a few test pieces first to make sure I was happy with the cut, then once I had all the bits marked up just made sure I had them in the correct position and hoped I got it right All worked out fine thank god as I only had one chance at getting it right
