Default Outdoor kitchen cabinets - Formply?

    Hi guys

Looking to build a pretty basic outdoor kitchen. It will house a built in BBQ and sink with bench space on top, built on top of some cabinets.

It will be sitting on a concrete slab under the eave of the roof. Will get some early morning sun but will be protected from harsh afternoon sun. It will be exposed however to wind and rain. A "normal" rain shower won't get it very wet but any storms or high wind will blow rain in on top of it.

Am I asking for trouble building the cabinet carcasses out of form ply? Is it likely to weather and disintegrate after a short time?

Formply is actually a rough waterproof ply with a black plastic coating to make it smooth. Years ago I made some benches for the local rifle range.

I sealed the edges with polyurathane paint. They are out in the weather and show no signs of deteriorating.

Just be sure that you get real formply and not a cheap substitute that is not waterproof.

Thanks for the info, sounds like it is doable.

Is the formply from bunnings of a sufficient quality?

Unless you are wanting the formply finish I don’t think there is any major advantage in using it over any other quality waterproof ply and sealing it up well on all faces
You can get formply in structural and non structural grades ( I think Bunnings sells both) but it’s main attraction is the film face for a good finish not particularly the boards structure itself
About 15 years ago I built a commercial building for an architect and we clad the whole exterior with formply with 10mm expressed joints. The formply specified was an Aussie made premium product and the manufacturer guaranteed it would last 20 years plus

I’ve just built an enormous outdoor kitchen unit with this: https://shop.nover.com.au/content/fi...RE-6pp-WEB.pdf

It’s completely waterproof, has a smooth finish, and is easy to work. There’s other incarnations of it, one of which is called “Star Board”, which I’ve used extensively on boats, it lasts forever.
