Floating TV Unit
Hi All,
need some advice for making a low profile floating TV unit.
I have been searching the stores but nothing which matches my liking. So I have decided best to make it myself.
Below is a photo of what I'm looking to make.

Question:
I'm looking for a white high gloss finish, which I can either:
1. use 18mm MDF melamine, build and then send off for 2-pac spray
or
2. purchase 18mm MDF white gloss panels (eg. EGR Stylelite ), but not sure how edge banding is going to work (which will match the top coat).
Option 1 will cost more for the 2-pac polyurethane spray, but option two I worried about edge banding so it looks top notch.
Any advice appreciated

This exact unit is available here with free shipping
FREE SHIPPING Adelaide Floating TV Entertainment Unit - JUST MODERN FURNITURE
I doubt you could make this unit for similar money once you take 2 pack paint into consideration.

Hi Samo,
Yes your correct that JUST MODERN FURNITURE make these cabinets, but issue I have is buying something online without seeing it. This company does not allow you to view the quality and don't have a contact phone number to call and dont reply to emails. I don't want to spend $1600, and receive something I'm not totally happy with.
If I go option 2, I can purchase a sheet for $150 and cut it down myself, only question is edge banding.

if you're after a high quality finish, then you don't want edgebanding (imho).
I have kitchen cabinets made by a reputable company here in Sydney - look great. They have edgebanding though. We recently had the laundry done and the (different) company we used for that did full painted. Much better looking ! If it was going in my loungeroom, there's no question it'd need to be option 1...

Just a quick note on high gloss paint,(2pac)
Around Melbourne I’m being charged around $100 a square metre.
Cheers Matt.

Definitely option 1, even at $100 per square you'll come out well ahead.
For one unit, gloss edging is not a viable option. You can't buy pre-glued, so you'll have to contact glue it on, unless you have a hot-melt edgebander, and you'd have to buy a 100m roll of the stuff.

thanks everyone.
Hi Matt,
would the $100/m2 be per coat or total? (my cabinet dimesions will be 2200 x 400 x 330, so its approx 3.0m2)
I'm in Melbourne also, do you recommend anyone?
Renato
P.S. just going back to edge banding, according to EGR Stylelite spec sheet, they have two methods - pre-primed or fusion, but I dont understand whats involved in each, so as you say, best to go option 1.

I'd recommend Empradoor in Moorabbin
Re edgebanding: pre primed will be for a standard hot-melt edgebander, fusion will be for a glueless edgebander
