Yep! The pics just don't do the size of the beams justice. No point of reference I guess. Should be a fun and stressful project!

    Hi Dom
just remember that you are building a garage, not a demilune table.
Square is relative. One reason you have a slick is so you can adjust one or both parts of a joint to the shape it needs to be TO FIT

Yes, very true Ian. I have a tendancy to try to make everything perfect even when not required or appropriate. I'm getting better though - I am teaching myself to put less effort into things that don't merit it and thus save myself a heap of time; which can be applied to things that matter!

If you don’t mind me asking, where did you source the timber from?

Happy to discuss via PM if you don’t want to go public.
    Cheers

Hey Dom, the woodpile looks impressive! Yeah I guess you can only get boring machines used and I have seen them for around $200-$300 from time to time on ebay, plus shipping it still works out at a fraction of the price of the Makita. I'm assuming there is still some cleanup work to be done after using a chain morticer although I haven't had the pleasure of using one myself yet. The guys who I spoke to who had experience with the boring machine claimed that they were able to cut mortices at close to the same pace as the chain morticer but I suppose it depends alot of wood species aswell. Good to hear the saw goes well and I'll be pulling the trigger on that one soon. Well I picked up 4 or 5 metres of Oregon/Douglas Fir 4x6's and 4x8's a few weeks ago and have been chipping away at them (they are about 80 years old and weren't in the best shape) and they are all dead straight and square now hahaha although some are a little smaller. My intention is to build a little cabin with them, how big is your garage going to be?

Yeah ok, i'll keep an eye out. I looked a couple of times and couldn't see any for reasonable money - and all in the US.

Sounds great. My garage is small - just filling a gap between my current brick garage and the fenceline. It will be 3.3m x 7m. The plan is to use it to park a car and move the gardening tools into to clear up more space in the 6x8m garage for woodworking. I'm also hoping to store some timber under the eaves.

Also made 4 crib ponies as per pictures in Steve Chappells book. These were proudly made completely for function, speed and cost of construction, with no regard for form. All scraps i had lying around - even some roadside pine!

I got a bit confused. The timber you had delivered is Macrocarpa, so is it really Cupressus macrocarpa (aka Golden Cypress) aka Hesperocyparis macrocarpa or Monterey Cypress?

Then I saw you had used Cypress Pine (the Aussie native) for the saw horses, and thought it was from the new stock delivered (and wondered why the pile out the back showed no knots ). Aussie Cypress (or White Cypres) is Callitris columellaris according to Wood Database.

Yeah I am using Macrocarpa / Moneterey Cypress for the garage. The horses are Australian Cypress.

So I'm still waiting on a second delivery of timber that includes all of my brace stock, some summer beams and a few replacement sticks. Peter at Timbersearch has been really great throughout. Hopefully I receive the rest this coming week.

I don't want to start until I have all the timber and can sort through and select the appropriate timbers for each component.

In the meantime, over a couple of evenings this week I made a mallet to drive joints together, knock in pegs and maybe hit my big framing chisels. Bit of offcut reclaimed Blackbutt for the head, nice straight grained Blackwood for the handle, some scrap Italian veg tanned leather for one side of the head. 2.3kg and feels nice and solid. Happy with the result.
