Been doing a bit more work on the leg. All 5mm 304 stainless steel. Process was bend the curve. Fabricate gussets. Tack weld, TIG, gussets in place. Tack ribs onto straight section. Grind, sand welds flat. Calculate transition point and cut. Calculate overall length of vertical section. fabricate foot and bottom gussets. Tack foot and gussets to vertical member. Tack ribs to vertical member. Weld out. Tack two halves together ensuring plumb and square. Seems to have worked out ok. Not bad I reckon for someone who has never operated a TIG welder before. I did though have the guidance of a mate of mine who is an experienced welder fabricator.
Mon or Tues I will finish the welding and finishing of the stainless. Then the front face of the leg gets a walnut veneer, yes, including the curved face. The wheel is on order, should have that by about Wed or Thursday. Nearly there.
Cheers
Bevan. Glutton for punishment!!!!!!

It's been a while but I have had a couple of issues with the customer over the handles and a few not insignificant personal issues.
All that is required is the lamination onto the front of the leg and I will deliver next week. I will do this differently next time.
Cheers

Bevan, that is a strange looking handle arrangement. Not prepared to believe it's your design.
The unit really looks great.

The customer had previously selected a handle from the Hefele catalogue, an antique bronze ring style. During the making, she, the customer, changed her mind. She decided, and I agree, that a stainless handle would be more in keeping with the look. She wanted a low profile look, which of course required a recess carved into the drawer fronts to accommodate finger room.
I made 4 prototypes before I got what both she and I agreed on. The actual making of the handles was quite quick, 3 hours, but I did have to have 2 goes to get them right.
Taking off 9 drawer fronts to carve them took a bit more time.
Why would you think it is not my design Arthur?
Thanks for the compliment as well. It has been quite a learning experience.Last edited by Enfield Guy; 11th June 2010 at 07:04 PM. Reason: Spelling.

Bevan I just think those handles do not quite fit with the overall design. I assumed that the customer had urged (for want of a kind word) you into doing them that way.
perhaps they look better in the flesh.

Yes, the customer wanted a lower profile handle. It certainly wasn't my preferred choice. Having said that, one of the prototypes I made required 50mm wide stainless to make and a hell of a lot more work. These are just cut from 12mm stock and bent in a former, much easier.

Delivered at last
The cabinet is finished and delivered. The customer has been overseas for a while and that has prevented delivery until now. Well, last monday anyway. I think it shows the piece in context with the rest of the apartment. I also made the shelves above the desk. I hope you all like it, she certainly did and does.
Cheers

Yes really blends in with the rest of the items in the apartment. I can see that you gave yourself no room for error between the wall and colum.
