Thread: My Quarantine Desk

After I mainly made small pieces and outdoor stuff I moved now to do indoor furniture. In the recent Covid outbreaks my family has been put into quarantine at home. We are all good, so no problem.

Anyway with kids at home as well we decided we need a small desk in our bedroom where either one can retreat to do work or online meetings in peace.

Being in isolation however also meant we couldn't go anywhere and buy something. So I had to do with what I got and found in and around the garage.



I found some 30mm thick ply which was used for temporary kids tables and some 4x4 pine which I had to rip down to something more like 2x4 size.

And even for the finish I had to search through the cans I still had. I found some walnut stain and varnish and some charcoal stain and managed to mix them to a color which would match our other furniture in the room.

So here is the endproduct.


The support structure is made with mortise and tenon joints. Feed and top support with through tenons which I also drove some wedges. The stretcher with stopped mortise.

Was my first time to do these joints and I could see the learning curve in the accuracy of the first to the last joint. The first ones are not as pretty but still very tight so I am not concerned about reliability. And you cannot see them as they are the ones directly underneath the top.

Took me some time to smoothen the ply wood top to get rid off the water stains to a level that the stain and varnish would cover the rest nicely. Worked quite good.

I then also faceted the feet and supports to give it a more refined look and tapered the underside of the top so it doesn't look so heavy.

Other than some small help of the table saw and a cordless drill everything was done by hand with the help of these main protagonists

It turned out much better that I expected when I started. With this I feel more confident to tackle more indoor furniture.
