Thread: Red cedar root/settlers chair/phone table/combination

Red Cedar root chair + silky oak seat / combination > Settlers chair / Phone Table / Drawing Desk > Made from a Red Cedar root , took a few years of havin this piece of wood starin at me from a corner / or reminding me of it`s existence every time i`ve had to move it . Ounce i made me mind up what it could look like , the rest was easy , just skinned knuckles and a few slices later , which was better than spendin hours pondering what could it be , over about 20yrs , BIG long term mind investment here , Anyhow chipped about 1" depth off the entire root form , done this by hand as i found that if you get the right depth , where the ingrown dirt and such arn`t prevelant anymore then it`s not so difficult . Meaning that the whole root having grown in a ring formation , i was able to knock off quite sufficient size pieces and still maintain the overall shape , was a bit like peelin an orange or such . Used an end docked piece of silky to give an outward spiral concept for the seat . A solid piece of Red Cedar for the back of the seat ( table top ) , a piece of Silky Oak for the rotation piece inset by 15mm to the Cedar for extra strength . Rotation from chair to table is simple , remove the small awl , lay back and replace awl in guide ( lock ) hole , reverse procedure for turning to chair , the drawing table comes about by removing large dowel peg and putting in secondary hole , in this the top is restricted (by hole placement ) to only tilt around 45deg forward but where ever backward to suit . finished in cabot`s , thought about others but Lacquer was the only way to bring up the colour of the root . Although the chair seat may look to off set , it`s not ,tis a bit of an optical illusion as such , an quite a comfy seat actually .
