Default Redgum and Blackwood hallway table

I completed this today as a present for my Mum's birthday tomorrow. I picked up the chunky slab of Redgum a couple of weeks ago. It was a large very rough sawn piece. I had some lengths of Blackwood so decided to utilise them in the design.

This is my first attempt at a piece like this and also my first time using Minmax wipe-on poly. After reading up on its application on this forum, I decided to give it a shot. I was very pleased I did so, I am very happy with the result. I also read one members post that they noticed a real difference between the 3rd and 4th coat. Well, wow, what a difference that made.

That is magnificent. Can you give a few more details (maybe a pic or two) on the drawer. Great work

Thanks guys. Mum was really impressed. I took it around to her house today to surprise her for when she got home. I couldn't take it tomorrow for her actual birthday as we'll have a car full of kids.

Here are a couple of more shots. I don't have any of the process. Got carried away making it in the shocking heat. I do have a photo of the Redgum when I first got it. And the second and third photo's show more of the drawer. You can see how I left the whole underside natural.

Looks great doesn't it. Kinda like a giant band sawn box.

Did you cut it out like an over sized band saw box? And how does it ride, on runners or wood on wood

One big cut on the band saw. I picked myself up my first band saw two weeks ago, a 16 inch Hafco, was a great way to give it a trial run.
I hand planed, scraped and sanded the top, two sides and back. The front already have a finished face when I got it. The inside of the drawer I used a carving disc on a grinder to get a basic shape then sanded the remainder.

The drawer is wood on wood. Not the smoothest of functions but it works. I can't see Mum using it often or at all. I guess it will depend on where she puts it. But it will simply be ornamental.

Brilliantly done! I've never seen a design like that before. Your finish is impeccable as well - really makes the timber pop. A little beeswax on the runners might smooth up the slide a bit.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Thanks!! I really wanted to make the most of the solid piece of Redgum. It really is a beautiful piece of timber, lots of feature from many angles.
I'll try some beeswax, a little bit smoother will complete it.
    Thanks again!!
