    Default Removing Sapwood

I have got a whit box trunk section that I am planning on using as a side table. I've removed the bark with relative ease but now need to remove the flaky sapwood. I've experimented on a section with a tomahawk, chisels, sander etc but cannot seem to get it off without cutting into the heartwood.

I have done this before with the tomahawk and ended up with a "chiseled" finish that looked quite good. This time however I wish to have a smooth natural finish.

While I'm here........ Does anyone have the secret to ensuring a perfectly flat, level and parallel cuts for the base and top of logs? I have managed in the past with trial and error, chainsaws and electric planes, but would like to find an easier way...

hmmm just realised this should be in a Timber thread...

Well bledrin i normally just run the jigsaw around the edges kinda followin the edge of the sap line (on an angle to suit)then get into it with the sander usin mainly the front roller then finishen with the vibrating sander ,you make a few of your own adjustments but done is done , that help i feel better

I've pretty much finished and was really asking for the next time I do it. I went with the tomahawk option again. I'll post a pic tonight.

Yeah, I also was unsure whether you were referring to a slab or to a trunk. Picture answers the question. I like those joints on the table top. Nicely done.

As to removing the sapwood, have you considered using one of those carving blades that goes into an angle grinder? - can't think of the name at the moment.

    Cheers

    Graeme

    Remembered, it's an Arbortech blade.

I finished the last od the tomahawking today. Decided to do a bit of carving to reshape the base to accentuate the "foot" of one of the trunks. I've managed quite well with the ROM & 40 Grit to remove the axe marks. That angle grinder blade would have been a better ption from the start though. I wil ahve to look into it if we decide to start doing more of these..
