Ringed Gidgee and Spotted Gum mirror
I can't tell if its because spring is in the air, the melbourne woodworking show or because I want to make sure I actually get some things finished for the (what will hopefully be regular) melbourne gatherings of WWF members. Regardless of the reason though, I finally have found some motivation to finish off a project that has been hatching in my brain for quite a while, and been taking up precious real estate in the shed for the passed few months.
The spotted gum was floorboards left from a job, thicknessed down to remove the glue ripples. The gidgee was from a single slab that I scored on eBay from a lovely fellow in Dalesford.
It was a great project to learn a few new techniques using my router, using timber as a sled to flatten the uneven surfaces, then again to rebate the gidgee to house the gum.
Finish is Danish oil (4 coats in total)
miters were domino'd and glued (took me a while to set the cuts spot on, a shooting board is now on the list of jigs to build)

I think this is great. Simple and effective. I cant quite see in the photos, is the gidgee sitting flush with the spotted gum, or overlaid ontop slightly?

Yup, the gidgee is about 25mm thick where the gum is about 14mm.
I was after the illusion of the gum sort of coming out of the gidgee.

Nice job. I was going to ask about the joins but the second set of photos explained it all.
