No use the casting and embedding resin and add a pinch of black oxide. My advice is experiment on a dummy piece first, Its easy to whip the resin and get bubbles so it needs a bit of practice.
I filled some small worm holes with a syringe that I got from the vet. Chemist gives you funny looks when you ask for his biggest syringe and needle. Some people leave it clear and put a bug at the bottom of the hole.. Timbermate is too soft, Araldite is harder to get a good bubble free surface. Tips above are great.

Trouble with the 5 minute Araldite is that if the void is a bit large it can get too hot from the reaction and foam and bubble out DAMHIKT
It's then a pain in the proverbials to get a clean hole for the next try

johnn, don't use timbermate putty.the casting resin or wests systems is alot better.as for final coating,on redgum (in my opinion) you can't use any type of oil (tung, danish ect) it darkens the timber to much so a clear varnish is heaps better
