Rocker for Christmas
My first stab at a rocking chair. I made it as a Christmas present for my bride of 30 years. It's a Paul Sellers design. I made it out of sapele, mostly with hand tools. The finish is a base coat of boiled linseed oil with 5 coats of poly over that. It turned out pretty well. A few mistakes but it doesn't look bad from 10 feet away.

Sapele
Thanks for the thumbs up. My question is about sapele. I've made a couple other pieces with it (the cabinet in the rocking chair picture for one) and I really like the wood. I think the wild grain is beautiful which also makes it a bit hard to work, especially with hand tools. Sometimes it seems like it has a mind of its own. I had a real problem with this when I was carving the seat. I kept getting tear-out even though my tools were quite sharp. I'm going to try my hand at a Sam Maloof rocker next. I know I won't use sapele. Any suggestions for working sapele? How about cherry or walnut for the Maloof rocker? Pros and cons? Thanks for any advice you can give.
