    Default Rocking Chair - WIP

I usually don't start a WIP so early in the project. There is a good chance you could grow old before it is completed.

Some time back I purchased the Charles Brock plans for a Maloof style rocker. They have just been gathering dust as I just have not found the time nor inclination to get started. Well, the time has come.

What I like about the Brock plans is that the design is not set in concrete. One can change the design to personalise it. The seat can be customised, the head rest shape can be made to your own liking, likewise the arms, and so on. In fact Brock encourages these changes. What you really get is the dimensions for all the components, joinery techniques, angles for various components, and tips for the overall construction and final shaping.

So to get things started it was a trip up to see Mal for some Tasmanian Blackwood. I needed pieces between 2 1/2" and 3" thick (62mm and 75mm). Whilst there picked up some raintree and cedar blocks which will become bandsaw boxes.

The plans call for starting with the seat as everything else grow out from this. The first image shows the five 2" thick pieces which will make up the seat. The chalk markings at the end is where the pieces will be cut to cause the bow across the width of the seat.

Before glueing up the bandsaw is used to remove the bulk of the timber. This saves time when grinding the seat to shape. I used biscuits to line everything up. Brock uses dominos - dowels can also be used.

Before glueing everything up the tennons for the front and back legs are made on the two outside pieces. Thisn is the next two images.

The next image is the glue up.

The following image is the seat during the shaping process.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

The first image shows more work done on the seat.

Next the front legs were cut to shape and then dado made to accept the seat tenons. The legs were tapered on the table saw and have yet to be turned.

Just noticed that images 1 and 2 are the wrong way around.

Followin this it was on to the back legs. These were marked out using a template constructed from the plans. Each leg was cut on the bandsaw then final shaping done using a pattern following cutter on the router table.

Will try and put some more up tomorrow.

    Hi Bob,
I think Blackwood is an excellent choice for a Maloof rocker.

After having watched Wongo make his a few years back it then became one of my one-day projects, so I'll also watch this with interest.
I make things, I just take a long time.

Adder blocks are glued onto the back legs where they join the seat. The first image is where the adder block is cut at 6 degrees to allow the back legs to fit at an angle. Maloof used to achieve this buy using special router cutters.

After making the 6 degree cut the mortice (dado) location is marked out - image 2

Then it on to the table saw using the sled to make the dado cuts. Bit of a juggle here as nothing is flat /parallel.

Next two images is a dry fit of the legs after fine tuning the dado cuts for a tight fit.

The rather greenish images were taken under fluro lights while the rest is using flash.

Normally the next step would be to work on the arms. But before I can do this I need to turn the front legs and drill a dowel hole in the top for the arms. New lathe has turned up but need to do a few things before I can use it. So have jumped ahead and worked on the rockers.

Have made the jig to form the rockers from MDF so that it is about 38mm thick.

First image is of the timber to be used for the rockers. It is 1 1/2" thick ( about 38mm). From this I will cut 3mm wide slats to make up the rockers Finished thickness will be 1" (25mm)

Next image is some of the slats.

Then a dry run was done to check out the jig

    Next image is glue up.

Each rocker was left for 24 hours before being removed. Last image is the two rockers.

Really not coming along fast. There was a delay in getting the WIP on the forum. This is where I am at now. Not sure if I will get much done tomorrow.

Looking good. Not as nice as Yowie's rocker, but hey, I'm biased
