Rosewood & Mahogany Hall Table Build
I've been commissioned by my church to build a communion table for the front of the church, the style I have chosen is a japanese inspired hall table with a few adjustments to the height and width to better suit the purpose.
The timber for the top, aprons and shelf is PNG Rosewood which was given to one of our Pastors over 30 years ago when he was a missionary in PNG and has been drying in his garage ever since, I chose to not buy more Rosewood for the legs and stretchers but to use a mildy contrasting timber (Philippine Mahogany or Luan as it's sometimes called) which I reclaimed from the old staircase of the church. It was about to be used for firewood!!! That's 12" x 2" select mahogany firewood!!!
Chris Parks from the forums helped me to straighten and dress the boards on his equipment, thank you Chris for being so awesome.
The PNG Rosewood is very nice to work and amazing to finish, it looks like a 3D hologram with Scandinavian Oil on it and it smells nice too however it did cause me some respiratory issues and I had to try very hard to take breaths for half a day after sanding it, probably should've gone to the doctor but that's like asking for directions when you're lost or like asking the neighbour to help you carry the new fridge upstairs, you're admitting defeat and I couldn't risk that. Potential death was easier.
Anyway, here are some photos but I didn't do a photo log as I focused on the videos instead, it will be a 3 part series so I encourage you to watch, like and subscribe on youtube if you have the time.
Thanks for watching and thanks again Chris.

Chris,
Love the fact that you where able to use timber recycled form the church itself.
Gives the table more meaning for the church.

Ive never liked NG Rosewood when I've seen it in furniture, usually in New Guinea or in furniture stores but it was because none. Of the pieces I saw were ever done properly.
when I sanded it down to 600 then lifted the grain and sanded it again then applied the finish it was amazing, people were just stopping and staring at it. It seriously looked like a movinCheck out my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/lumenman

Great job on the build. I am finding that Rosewood is becoming one of my favorites species of wood.
