I'd fit the dovetailed pair first, then t'other.

That way you can add the depth of the dovetail to your calculations, so each half-lap would be slightly thicker.

The other way, you're cutting out a section of the dove-tail that the other piece wouldn't replace without ridiculous complications.

How high is this table ? Dinning table height ?
It looks like its going to have some sideways / twisting spring in it . Are you intending to add some 45 degree bracing between the top and legs to stop that?

I actually had this thought soon after posting! Thanks for the advice. Based on the comprehensive survey size of 1, I have cut the lap this way and it seems to be sturdy for downwards pressure

The height including top is 750mm, so dining table height. I had not considered this but having just put it together... if the Wiggles were auditioning, this table would probably get the job.

I came across this post, which shows some small cross rails to provide bracing near the legs. I will probably do something as these are quite subtle, but I am open to suggestions.

I might add them on just the screwed in rail first and see if that provides adequate bracing before adding them to the dovetailed rail.
