    Default Large round window question

Hi all, I'de like some opinions on a project i'm working on. I purchased a large (1.7m diameter) secondhand round timber window which I plan on installing in our bathroom as a feature. Of course, as it would happen, i would like to modify it from it's current form. In the picture you will see that the window has an internal frame which divides the window into quarters. My plan is to actually remove this internal frame altogether and have the window as a large port hole window with one pane of frosted glass. This will suit the style of the house better. In essence i purchased the window just for the round frame. My question for you guys is, if i remove the internal members will the frame still hold it's shape or should i build a square frame around it before removing the members? The round frame is made of smaller sections of timber all glued together. When the window has glass put back into it and is installed i don't imagine bracing will be an issue but the in the mean time.....??

    Cheers

The frame should retain its shape until such time external forces are placed on it. Its only a lightweight construction and has been designed for bars. Once removed, the frame will be reliant on glass to retain shape, followed by the surrounding structure once installed. I would leave it as it is if twas me. Stone from the mower and its only a quarter the size piece of glass with a quadrant radius, instead of a 1700 dia circle which probably wont fit anyway.

Thanks for the response rustynail. Understand your conservative "if it aint broke..." thoughts. I do need a different design though so i'll attempt some reinforcement and then knock out the internal structure. I'll make it work. Hopefully it isn't too prestressed. Window wont be near lawn mowers so not too concerned about broken glass.

    Default Really

Really it all depends on what wall structure its being installed into!

Is it a brick wall - tilt panel concrete or a timber framed wall?

You would need a porthole window frame complete with round architraves (internal and external) to cover the circular joint between wall and frame to water proof it.

I would think the frame you have is too flimsy to support masonry above it for example, specially without the internal quadrant members!

You might easily get away with it tho in say a timber framed wall if there's no roof weight bearing directly above it or you install a lintel to shed the roof down weight either side to vertical studs.

The way I look at it... is that if your going to have to set up to make round timber architraves, you might as well make the round window frame to match at the same time - its a similar amount of work to setting up to make the round architraves....

This pretty much means buying second hand round windows without the matching architraves a waste of time unless you don't value your own time making them yourself.
