Default Need to seal cupboard frame?

I'm building a linen cupboard in a large alcove in a house with drywall that's gyprock over thin metal framing, so the cupboard must be entirely self-supporting. I'll just plaster the front to fit in (above the doors).

As a fairly agricultural carpenter, there's a minimum of smart jointing. I'm using Meranti for most of the framing, Melamine shelves (1,600 x 600 x 20) and a few bits of Jarrah for the door frames and some rigid uprights.

This is all wholly internal timber and the Jarrah will be painted.

Do I need to do any kind of sealing of the structural Meranti?

What about the edges of the Melamine - I had to saw all the shelves to fit so there's one side that is a bit coarser than the others.

It is in a very dry area.

    thanks

    Andy

If the shelves have a 1600mm span, I'd be visiting the Sagulator.

And no, it doesn't need sealing, however it can't hurt if the melamine isn't highly moisture resistant (HMR has a green tint to the board edge)

    Wink Pretty sag-proof

    Thanks for the Sagulator recommendation.

The shelves have 19mm thick, 68mm deep Meranti (Shorea) running the full length of the front edge plus inset from the rear about 40mm, so I think both areas of max load are covered.

Estimating even 100kg center loaded, it was an "acceptable" 2.25mm total sag and mostly far less.

I figure any decent size cupboard has to cope with kids climbing the front to check out hidden presents at the back.

I don't know if you would call it sensible caution or over-engineering.
