Sheds
Does anyone know what sort of structures you can legally build in VIC without a building permit?
I already know that I can get away with a small shed under 10m2. What about carports if they don't have sides?
Can anyone help?

weaver your best bet is to go ask your local council as each council have their own requirements with building regulations.
With the Whittlesea council no permit is required if your carport is freestanding, floor area not exceeding 10m2, no more than 3m high, not constructed of masonry and located no further forward on the allotment than the associated building.Regards
Al .

Its hard to have that conversation with council because it will quickly become apparent that I'm trying to find as much lee way around the rules as I can. The guys at our council tend to be a bit controlling.
If they would say "you can do this, this, this and this and that is it any further and you need a building permit". then that would be fine. Things is that they don't and they often require the ridiculous.
For example my mum has several Tatty huts (accomodation for itinerant potato diggers) that need a little bit of work done on them. Apparently I need a building permit to fix a couple of the foundations. I wouldn't need a permit to replace them since they are under 10m2 but to add some blocks to straighten a bearer I do need a permit because that constitutes re-stumping.

You're council will perhaps have a bit of info on a web page. Should give you an idea of size at least. That lets you know if you need permission or not. As a shed is big bucks it would be a shame if you had to pull it down later.
